Birth record for Henry Perkin or Brown? Staffordshire 1868

I cannot find a birth record for my great-grandfather Henry Perkin born 9 May 1868 (as remembered by my mother, and confirmed by the 1939 Register). He is supposed to have been born in Abbots Bromley, son of John Perkin and Ann Brown (unmarried: Ann Brown was John Perkin's stepdaughter - his wife's daughter). Family tradition and all of the circumstantial evidence supports this, and I have DNA matches to descendents of his brother James, but I cannot find a birth record under Henry or Harry or Perkin or Brown. He is also missing from the 1871 census.

Any suggestions?

I've got four Henry Perkin births between 1866-1870 but none from Staffordshire.

There are 111 Henry Brown records for 1868. In any case, none from Staffordshire ... again.

Sorry.

It wasn't legally required to register with the government until 1873 so you might check church records. If nothing can be found, just count back from the first census he appears in and estimate it.

Thanks for looking. I agree he probably wasn't registered: the circumstances were unconventional, and the family were Methodist, not CofE, so no accessible church records. His absence from the 1871 is puzzling, though. I have his exact date of birth; would like confirmation of his parents.

Thanks, but not the right Henry Brown. I've found him in the censuses. Mine should be in Uttoxeter district.
