Are there Jacksons in your tree? Jackson Name Study

The Jackson Name Study has been reactivated and you can read about the goals and how you can both help and benefit from participating in the
study described here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Jackson_Name_Study

This is a world wide study so all Jackson researchers are encouraged to use categories to group these folks into various categories such as Jackson Immigrants, Jackson Head of Line, Jackson DNA Groups, Jackson Brick Walls and often used location groups such as Australia, England, Ireland & Northern Ireland, and all states in United States.  I am hoping to recruit researchers from areas other than United States to help with naming the categories within their area.  If willing, please contact me!

This is just a suggestion (can be ignored!) - it would be nice and very convenient if those who post and mention any names would 'linkify' them, add direct links to their profiles for those names.  It's certainly not required, some research on our parts can probably find them, but it would really make it easier for the rest of us to immediately check a person (and their descendants) who may sound similar to one of our own ancestors.
"Linkify!"  Great word and idea.  So, yes, linkify your posts and save others from becoming detectives.  Tho that's a good skill for genealogists :)

Yes, my grandfather (who died when my mom was 2) was James T Jackson (Jackson-26415) who has been somewhat of a brick wall. While he is listed as being born in Arkansas on his marriage certificate, my DNA matches seem to tie him to Thomas Daniel Jackson (Jackson-31485) of Union City Tennessee. Before marrying my grandmother, Ola Baker, according to my cousin he was said to have been married before but divorced on the grounds of alleged adulatory (he claimed the son by that marriage was not his.) Again, DNA matches leads me to believe that son was Luther Earl Jackson (Jackson-26933). I have found documentation that supports these speculations, and if true, then I have a much longer pedigree I might explore.

I continue to add new JACKSON material on my silverbowl website: http://www.thesilverbowl.com/history/FishingForJACKSONs.html

Also, there are new JACKSON-related pieces on my Blog. The most recent profile was on Rev. William JACKSON (1737-1795): https://sharonoddiebrown.blogspot.com/2019/09/rev-william-jackson-his-gore-ancestry.html

Yes! As far back as 1500's Lucinda Jackson, Nathaniel Jackson, Joseph, Isaac, and more...
by Margaret Mujica-Ruiz G2G1 (2.0k points)
selected by Margaret Mujica-Ruiz

Margaret has a connection to a particularly interesting line of Jackson's.  The first one for her is Lucinda Jackson (1891-1976).  The first Jackson to America is Isaac Jackson (1665-1740's), and the first to be associated with the name 'Jackson' is John Jackson II formerly de Lascelles (abt 1340-abt 1392).  However, there is a distinct lack of sourcing, especially in the early ancestors, and much cloudiness and twists, so I wouldn't trust the current genealogy too far.  Among the disputes is a possible connection to President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845).  But there are numerous Jackson lineages connected here.

What is particularly interesting to Jackson descendants is that Brian Akers has attached his yDNA test to this Jackson line.  His Y700 test has resulted in a yDNA haplogroup I-A9098, a distant descendant of yDNA haplogroup I-M253.  I-A9098 is sufficiently detailed that it should be useful for matching, or negative proof, that someone is NOT connected as they expected.  Why is an Akers yDNA result attached to Jackson yDNA?  Read Sydney Akers' profile for the explanation.  Since it's the only yDNA attached so far, it will need corroboration.  I would be surprised if there are no Jackson DNA studies out there already.

I have been researching my family for a couple or maybe several years. I can understand how tangled folks can be with the Jackson Family. Most of the families named their own children after their own siblings or parents its tangled and the only way i could actually keep track was by the years and US Census and Civil Records.

I have yet to see anywhere that we are linked to Andrew Jackson. I have found links where Jackson's previous to coming to the US were Lascelle's and there were interesting folks from Knights, Lords and even found a Princess. I try to keep all information on an excell spreadsheet with ID's too locate profiles.

I am trying to create a Family History Book.  I am at a standstill with one final link my GGG Grandmother married to Nathaniel Jackson not sure if what her real name is but she has been mentioned as Matilda Hicks. born 1799 in Georgia and a Slave to Joseph Jackson (Nathaniel's Father).  She then became the slave to Nathaniel in Alabama and travelled to South Texas and had children with him. He was a pioneer to the Underground Railroad in South Texas. if anyone has information regarding Matilda i would be most appreciative.

Thank you,

Margaret Mujica-Ruiz
I have taken My DNA through Ancestry, I am not sure if i uploaded it here as of yet. If not, perhaps someone could guide me how to do this.

Thank you,

Margaret Mujica-Ruiz

Howdy Margaret!  Yes, your AncestryDNA user name is now visible, and will appear on all profiles that may have detectable autosomal DNA shared with you.  That will help others know they may share DNA with you.  What will be more useful in the future, once the GEDmatch and WikiTree integration is restored, is to download your raw DNA from AncestryDNA and upload it to GEDmatch (genesis.gedmatch.com).  AncestryDNA will provide you with tools and lists of those who may match you, but only on Ancestry.com, admittedly a LOT of people, but you can find additional matches on GEDmatch, because it accepts uploads from many other DNA testing companies.  GEDmatch is free, but has additional advanced tools available for a small fee.  Adding your GEDmatch ID here will allow others to immediately compare with you (once the link between GEDmatch and WikiTree is re-established).  (I have a page of help on how to do this, but it's not updated yet for the recent GEDmatch Genesis changes.)

I have Jackson's in two lines of my family tree, one in Long Island and the other in the Midwest.

My 8th great grandmother was Elizabeth (Jackson) Tompkins, born in New Jersey to General Joseph Jackson whose line extends further back.

The other Jackson family connection is through Isabella Hughey who married Zadoc Jackson. They had 8 children.

Thanks for responding David.  I looked at your Zadoc and saw he had no father posted on WT.  So I added three categories on his profile: Jackson Brick Walls | North Carolina, Jackson Name Study | Marion County, Indiana.

I hope this is agreeable with you.  If not, feel free to remove them, but I am hoping folks will use this Name Study category to help group our Jacksons together.

Gosh, I thought there were Jacksons in everyone's family tree!  Yes, my 3rd great grandfather, George Jackson, is one of my brick walls.  He was born about 1795 in Delaware, U.S., and I have only one source for him.  This One Name Study will be my incentive to work on this family line again.

My earliest Jackson is Jeremiah Jackson of 1818 Fairfax County, Virginia.  His oldest son John traveled with some Civil War soldiers to the state of Vermont where he eventually settled.  John became a town Constable for Hebron, New York, married and had nine children.  I am John's great-granddaughter.

Jeremiah, John's father, had eleven children most of whom remained in the area of Virginia.  This has been a very interesting family to research, and I enjoy sharing.

I am just beginning to add my Jackson kin to WikiTree,  Thankfully it will not take long.

I sort of have a Jackson -- Andrew Jackson II, b ca Dec. 22, 1808, Nashville, Davidson Co., TN. He was President Jackson's adopted son, son of  Mary H. Sampson and her husband, Severn Donelson. Mary was the daughter of my ancestor, George R. Sampson, of Davidson Co., TN, a Revolutionary veteran formerly of Goochland Co., VA. Donelson was the brother of President Jackson's wife, Rachel.

I have several Jackson’s in my tree. My grandmother is a Jackson by maiden name in addition to the association with RDM. Ronny L. Jackson, MD., who is  my second cousin. My research, which began through FamilySearch. My furthest search can be tied to Thomas Jackson who was married to Ann Lightfoot and had 8 children. Thomas Jackson appears to have father and grandfather John Jackson Jr. and Sr., respectively. Their wives are here say, so would like further information there.

My furthest Jackson is William Alexander Jackson. B. 1786 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1820 he travelled to Australia onboard the HEBE, a convict ship. He was pardoned and married Caroline Turner in 1825 at Parramatta, NSW Australia.

He had a son James Jackson on 28/08/1828 in Sydsney, NSW.

William died in Gundaroo, NSW in Sept 1832.

His son, James Jackson married Mary Ann Todd in 1860 in Victoria Australia.

His son was born William James Jackson 04/09/1861 in Echuca, VIC Australia. He married Harriet Peat in May 1884 in Sydney, NSW Australia.

They had a son Edward James Jackson on 06/08/1892. He married Edith Ellen Pilkington in 1912 in Newtown NSW.

They had 1 child, Edith Gladys Jackson, 05/11/1913. Edward deserted the family and Edith (Nana) was raised by her mother alone in Sydney.

Edith married Oscar Frederick Hough in 1935, and had 2 sons. Denis Hough, born 10/03/1945 in Balmain, NSW is my father.

Hi, My maiden name is Jackson. I have researched as far back as possible along with my father. My Jackson brick wall is Thomas C. Jackson. He might have been born in Georgia or Florida (in 1826), married in Florida to Nancy Roddenberry, had 8 children. After Nancy's death, he married Rebekah Wisner McGee and moved to Shelby Co., Texas. I do not have a paper trail for his birth location or his parents other than the 1850 census for Wakulla Co., FL that shows him living next door to what looks like his brother, sister, and their mother who was born in Virginia. I would love to compare DNA with those who have Jackson family lines in Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

I am a Jackson by birth.  My 3g-grandfather, William Andrew Jackson (Jackson - 48746) is our brickwall, was born 1815 in Kentucky and died 1874 in Missouri.  He has been linked to Zephaniah and Fanny Jackson but the DNA for them is wrong.  They did have a son who was born in 1815 Kentucky but he is buried with them in Indiana, passing in 1887.  He has been our brickwall for at least 70 years and have many people working on him.  He might not even be a Jackson, for all I know and with my luck.
