One family enumerated twice in both the 1860 and 1880 censuses, in two different states

And I thought I had seen it all! Only found this looking for the mother-in-law. Charles Green was a wealthy merchant and he and several other families from Savannah, Georgia had summer/country homes in Prince William County, Virginia.

Hi Nancy.  It does happen that people get counted twice, although I don't think it happens all that often.  I had some ancestors where an entire family was enumerated twice, without moving, apparently because two different census takers covered the same rural road a couple of weeks apart.  I had a couple of other cases where people were counted twice because they happened to be visiting relatives when the census taker came down the road.  I never saw a whole family enumerated twice in different years, so you probably have a rarity there.  But records are records, all created by fallible humans, so you just deal with what you can find.
I also have seen a person counted twice in the same census and same state. This was a minor whose parents were divorced - he was either living with his grandmother or with his uncle, depending on which census record you look at. (Don't know why he wasn't living with one of his parents...)

Nancy, I bet this might be replicated for all those Charlestonians who had summer homes in Flat Rock, NC.
