Should the place of birth be United States? In 1770 it seems it should be listed as a colony.

No, it shouldn't be United States. All births in what is now the United States should use the proper colony name. One resource for that is this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/19msdf4uzxBiyIwCSNUBcrHt15Qp-DXpGxBYLp3YWDO0/edit#gid=1321555852
