My great grandfather, Lewis Anderson Conaway was born in Indiana on Nov. 13, 1872. He moved to Mobile, Alabama and married Lucy Elizabeth Vaughn. I'm trying to find his family from Indiana and am coming up with past his father and mother:
Born 1837 in Indiana
Papa (Lewis A.) Conaway and his brother rode from Michigan to Perdido, Alabama, on horseback. It was during the Jesse James days and Papa was very familiar with James' shenanigans.
The first thing they did was ride up to the trading post and as he was just about to dismount his horse, he felt a sudden pressure in his back that knocked him to the ground. A man had mistaken him for "a fellow who had fooled with his wife" and shot Cutter Lewie in the back with a shotgun."
Papa Conaway worked for Henderson Ship Building Company in Mobile as a carpenter.
