From the first time I discovered this ancestor, my question is: Why on earth would parents burden their child with the name of a very problematic person in the Old Testament? Has anyone explored this? The name does not seem to be common, even in 1800. I can't believe they simply chose it at random.

Probably not what you want to hear, but...

Leave Abimelech, and work on another ancestor or line, not for a day or a week, but for at least a month.  Then come back to Abimelech with fresh eyes, and you may notice something you didn't see before which gets you past him.  Works for me, a large percentage of the time. wink

On the profile of Abimelec Pate there is a note saying:

"Abimilech's parents are not known. There have been several trees on ancestry.com linking him to Bennet Pate. These trees list no sources"

I don't think there are any sources on the Geni tree either, are there?

Beat me to it Eva! Just been re-reading the profile.
My cousin,Kelly Hardcastle, doesn't agree with this. However, I found a census record for Charles Pate in Robeson County,North Carolina in 1800 that fits perfectly to be the father of Abimilech Pate.
