Images: Here Yesterday, Gone Today

Pray, tell me a little bit more about images.

I uploaded a BSA Police Crest for display on a profile.  I replicated this crest on many BSA Police former member profiles with the following:

{{Image|file=Allum-190.png
|align=r
|size=150px
|caption=BSA Police Crest
}}

The BSA Police Crest appears to have been deleted from the original profile to receive it, and not by me.

Can somebody explain?

Did you maybe mark it as not including the person?
No... it was displayed on the original profile down the right side column.  The image has been erased from the profile altogether.
Tag the thread with sysops, bug, and vandalism.  This should not have been possible (unless there was a complaint about privacy or copyright etc) and needs investigating.

The disappearance of the image from the Allum-190 profile's image list is the consequence of it being wiped from the system, not the cause.

If you removed the image from his profile page, i.e. removing his name from the list of profiles on the image editing page, then the image gets deleted after a time. If you want to use images for profiles but do not want them showing on the sidebar of the profile, upload them to a Free Space page instead.

Thanks - I think the BSA Police needs a free-space page - to eliminate the longish narrative in the category.  I'll start again... but much work lost.

It doesn’t seem to have been deleted(the wording appears but not the pic) maybe the coding has an error in it.

The coding is fine, thanks Marion...  It was working, and has worked for a few months now.  An entire roll of honour was endorsed with the badge, successfully.

All sorted. smiley

In edit mode, you had the extension wrong.  You had it as a .png, when it should have been a .jpg.  I have made the change, and it's fine now.

Thanks Ros...  What you did is place the profile picture of Allum on the right side within the profile.   A *.png extension for images is an acceptable image format.  I have correct this now with a totally new image file which is sitting in a new Space Page - British South Africa Police Rhodesia.jpg - Now the BSA Police Crest is on the right side within his profile.

Happy days are here again... now I have some 400 odd profiles to correct.

Trick now is to ask if there is a Bot that will change:

{{Image|file=Allum-190.png
|align=r
|size=150px
|caption=BSA Police Crest
}}

To

{{Image|file=British South Africa Police Rhodesia.jpg
|align=r
|size=150px
|caption=BSA Police Crest
}}

Ros,

It says right on the changes tab that the original png image he uploaded to the profile was deleted. The reason it's showing now is he uploaded another image to a free space page and replaced the png in the template.

I am aware that a png is acceptable, but if you have uploaded it as a jpg, you have to name it as a jpg where you use it.

I see now that you actually meant to use a different image altogether anyway: Allum-190 was a picture of the gentleman, not a picture of the crest.  Looks like you have some work ahead of you. smiley

Allum-190.png was a different file.  Two different images can have the same name with different extensions.

Yes! It's somewhat confusing because the .png image was deleted so all there is now is the profile photo which is a .jpg image with the same name. He didn't have the wrong extension, it just isn't there anymore.

Don't envy the task of replacing them all. frown

Curiosity... who deleted the image... for what reason, and why has the profile manager not been consulted, preferably before deletion...?
It doesn't say who deleted it, just that it is deleted. It doesn't even say when. It just shows that you uploaded [deleted] on a certain date. You can see it in the changes tab. I'm going to guess that you removed the profile from the image at some point and it was eventually deleted because it wasn't attached to any space or person. No one has made any changes to that profile except you. You may have not realized you'd done it or not realized it would result in deletion but I can think of no other explanation.
I can think of no reason for deleting it...  mysterious indeed... can’t imagine making a mistake in deleting the image... but the change tab is not specific about the deletion...  Anyway, time to move on...
