Switzerland is a pretty big place, genealogically speaking, but the Burkhalter family was concentrated in the general area of Hasle in the Emmental district in Canton Bern.  There were several different branches of the family, with no clear common ancestor; perhaps there was a common ancestor in the 15th century before parish records were kept.  That is to say, Michael might not be directly related to Christian, especially if they were from different parishes.  The first step is to discover the parishes where they lived.  There were several different Burkhalter families who emigrated to Pennsylvania and Georgia in the 18th century, but they have not been connected to each other.  My impression is that nobody has done an exhaustive search.  (My grandmother was a Burkhalter, and someday I just might go through all the parish records of Hasle and surrounding villages -- I can read the old German script.)
