I know my grandmother Ameda Hogbin was Mary Ellen Bell - Hogbin's step daughter. How and where can I find any information on  who her real mother was?

As she is named as Ameda’s mother. I suggest you start by searching for her birth record. I find familysearch.org is a good free site. If the mother is different, then enter father’s info and look for marriage to someone with that first name. Then it’s a case of working through the dates to find what is possible.

It is possible she is James half sister, like Vera who was born 1907. That isn’t possible I see because the father of James was already dead, so where does Vera come into it?

What leads you to believe she is a step-mother?  James Alva Hogbin’s obituary says that he and Mary Ellen Bell were married September 24, 1899 in Eureka, Illinois.  (Woodford County Journal, Jan. 26, 1950)

To kathy, if you look at Ameda's siblings  you'll  see their listed as half brothers  and sisters.  My grandmother  herself told me years  ago that  Hazel was her half  sister.

Alva and Mary Ellen appear on the 1900 census in Eureka, Illinois with no children and on the 1910 census in Eureka with children (Al)meda, age 7 and Edna, age 1.  In 1920, still in Eureka, “Metta” is age 17, Edna age 10, Hazel is 5, and Harold is 18 months.  In 1930, still in Eureka, Harold, Hazel, and Rhodabell are listed.  I don’t know where you are seeing half-siblings.  All four censuses list the same parents in the same place.
I was looking  at  my grand mothers page  on wikitree  and  it shows in parentheses  by different siblings  named , the word half.
That just means someone didn’t enter both parents when they created a person’s Wikitree profile.  All the available documentation says that Mary Ellen Bell was James Alva’s only wife.  Sister Edna’s obituary also lists Mary Ellen as her mother.
Ok  thank  you

Now I'll  have  to find  out  about  edna hgbin

I've  never  heard  anything  about  her

My grandmother  did  not  talk  about  her  family . And I  only met  a couple  of her  brothers  snd sisters. . All .my  aumts and uncles  have  passed  away.
I added a brief bio and sources to James Alva's profile so you can use them to improve the profiles of other family members.
