US Civil War needs help, please!

Thanks to all of our Civil War project members and to each of you who have added your ancestors to our project. We are an older project and our members are devoted and steadily working.

However, we could use some help. Here are ways you can help us:
1). By adding some new space pages or subprojects! Here are some ideas:
*British Citizens in the US Civil War;
*Vermont Brigade in the Battle of the Wilderness;
*Civil War Letters, Diaries and photos;
*Any specific unit that you would like to research.
*Can you think of any other topics?
2). Check our resources page and see if your state has a completed page. If not, please let me know and you can adopt that page and work on it for us.
3). Since our project is older, many of the profiles we added long ago could use updating.  You could help by checking your own Civil War profiles to see if they meet the current formatting standards, including the stickers.
If you think you can help, please comment below. Also, include your own ideas about things we need to do.
Thanks!

My GG grandfather , Josiah Washington Horton, dob Oct. 26, 1845, served in the Confederate Army. His profile picture is in his uniform. He came from Georgia, just outside Atlanta. He served in the 29th Georgia Regiment, Co. C as a private. According to a letter, he shot a carpet bagger and had to leave in a hurry. Riding horseback, he wound up in Old Woodville, Louisiana. He later moved to Ruston, LA where he met and married my GG grandmother, Priscilla Elizabeth Saunders, dob April 4, 1854-dod Feb 27, 1942 in Ruston.
The sources gathered and listed in the links from the referenced page are amazing and invaluable - cheers.

But... as WikiTree "material" (web pages), let's embrace the facts and leave out any celebration of a "cause"... The page borders are decorated with Confederate flags - seriously? I'd fix that ASAP.
As to other Civil War subject areas:  I have one subject that I am working on now.  My grandfather (b. 1845) was a Union soldier at the end of the Civil War.  Unfortunately for him, he was retained as part of the army of occupation and found himself stationed in Montgomery, Alabama for months after the close of the War. For a Yankee boy from central Massachusetts, that had to have been some horrible duty.  Perhaps others would have stories about other such "army of occupation" situations.

I could use some assistance with this free space page for Co. C, 10th North Carolina Artillery. Some of the men have profiles, but many more do not.

I volunteered a couple of weeks ago to be a part of the US Civil War project but haven't heard back from anyone.  I would be happy to help.
Rhonda, you now have the badge for the US Civil War Project. Welcome aboard.
Thank you!

Hi Paula.  I have been doing some cleanup on the Profiles linked to Category: Pennsylvania, United States Civil War by researching and updating those Profiles to their proper service unit.

Also from that research I have worked on the Category: Pennsylvania Civil War, Militia page as well.  Which reminds me, I believe that should be renamed to Category:Pennsylvania Militia, Civil War.

Also plan on adding a few source pages, like one for Bates, Samuel P History of Pennsylvania volunteers, 1861-5 prepared in compliance with acts of the legislature Publisher Harrisburg, B. Singerly, State Printer Vols. 1-5 Printed 1869 to 1871. Listing all of the volumes. This is a comprehensive history of Pa. Volunteers in the Civil War covering detailed descriptions of service record of each unit, final muster rolls, burials records and alphabetic listing of Filed Officers.. I added this to Sources on the Category: Pennsylvania, United States Civil War Page, but decided a Free Space page would be better in the long run and service more Categories and Profiles.

And after I add the Bates Free Space page, as a summer when I have a chance project, I planned on hitting each of the regiments listed on Pennsylvania, United States Civil War and adding this as a source as well.  And updates to Pennsylvania Resource Page US Civil War: War Between the States where appropriate.

How's that? smiley

Am I  just missing it or is there no information on MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia in the Georgia Civil War pages?  It was the capitol city of Georgia from the early 1800s to just after the Civil War .  The state house where the legislature seceded and the governor's mansion where Sherman slept on his March after the fall of Atlanta are still there.  My 3gg father was the blacksmith whose business was near the statehouse .  If the information is here I would like to find it. Hi Cherry,

There is a section on Baldwin County on the GA Civil War Resource Page but there is no specific space page that I am aware of that could be linked. There is also the Balwin County Page for Georgia under US History with a link to the Milledgeville categories and the Wikipedia page. That’s here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Baldwin_County%2C_Georgia

Let me know if you decide to follow up with research. You can create a space page and we will link it to both projects. That’s an excellent idea!

Paula,

1) I have a freespace page for Company G, 120th IL Inf., in which my gg/grandfather served.  I have the members from the Adjutant General's report listed, and as I create profiles, they're linked to the page (participation from others is certainly welcome!).

When I'm done with that, I plan on doing the same for his younger brother's unit.  And then there are two other gg/grandfathers who served, and another ggg/uncle . . .

2) Also, I've been adding information to the Illinois & Missouri Resource pages, and there's more to be done.  I'd be happy to adopt them.

I'm continuing the ongoing work for the 54th & 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, but would absolutely love to see projects get underway to build the profiles for the soldiers who served with:

  • 1st Regiment, Kansas Infantry (Colored), United States Civil War

  • 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry (African Descent) (Union), United States Civil War

These are the two units that are also sometimes considered "the first" along with the 54th Massachusetts. The 1st KS didn't have federal authorization, and didn't fill all ten companies, but saw action first. The 1st SC had issues with voluntary vs. involuntary conscription, contraband use, and use as labor vs. soldiering. But regardless of these technicalities, these men faced threats for their race above and beyond the standard threats of war most white soldiers face, and deserve their place in history.

I plan to get to them eventually, but there are days where I suspect I'm still going to be working on the 54th in 2029 wink

These are important units that we want to connect to the project. In the past we have had featured profiles in our google group and on our project page. I think it would be great to start featuring specific units.

I have added some links to the Kansas page.  I am willing to adopt it, too.

Thanks, Michelle! If you will please look under the collaboration area at the bottom and click join the trusted list, if will be the easiest way to add you.

This is tremendous!! Thank you!!
Since I have Fold3 for a few more months I have been searching for profiles in my tree that were in the Civil War. If anyone would like some info, if possible I can do some. That was suppose to be an answer and not a comment. No matter, The message is still there.
I just clicked the 'trusted list'!

Paula,

I have family members who served in 5 different Massachusetts units, with already categorized space pages for each. My main source is the American Civil War Database (paid, but worth it). I’ll try to add more information to those units. Also, I host the Biography Builders Challenge. I could have an upcoming theme be veterans of the CW. It would bring some attention to the project, and might bring in some new blood. Let me know.

For those of you interested in the Irish that fought in the U.S. Civil war I have started a page at Irish_Military_Diaspora_United_States Civil_War_1861-1865 It's mostly Notables.

I have read a great deal about that Richard. It is quite interesting! Everyone, I just got home from work about will check on the trusted list and images. I am not familiar with the American Civil War Database so we should add that to our list of paid sites on the primary resource page. Thanks!!

I would like to see a space for Civil War Nurses (which I am willing to create and manage, if okay to do), perhaps under the Hospitals section?

Also, I could "adopt" and manage the New York section, if a manager is needed.
