Are you as confused as myself with these Australian Cemeteries changes?

Having EditBot add ridiculously irrelevant sub-cities for Cemeteries Categories is a total waste of time and effort.  Nobody in Australia needs or uses these sub-cities in an address.  Most do not even know which one they live within!  Addressing categories as Ryde, Ryde City, New South Wales, etc, makes no sense.  Will EditBot be required to change these every three years when electoral boundary changes move the cemetery into a different 'city'?  Can we drop the 'Ryde City', etc back out of addresses please?  If the purpose for this change was to be more 'correct' than it failed, In the example I have used it is the City of Ryde.

Can you a provide a link to the area in question?

I've just found where I had seen it; on my Family New notice that came out yesterday: "08:54: EditBot WikiTree edited the Biography for Edward Richard Krajniak PhD (1948-2004). (Renaming category: Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium, North Ryde, Ryde City, New South Wales, Australia) [Thank EditBot for this]" But maybe I have misread it. Has EditBot removed the Ryde City from Macquarie Park?

It was renamed to:Category: Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium, North Ryde, New South Wales

These extra places are administration areas, related to local councils, not electoral boundaries.  Even so, we do not use them in everyday life here, as you say.

From what I have seen, editbot has been removing (not adding, as your post seems to imply) the unnecessary location 'bits' in categories, which is a good thing as these categories are incorrectly named and it's bringing such categories into line with the agreed-upon naming conventions. Such as: https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Lennon-886&diff=82649496&oldid=55843055

I'm really glad to see it is progressively being fixed, because the bazillion locations tacked on really bothers me, as you have relayed! You're right in that no body writes address like that, so the extra stuff is confusing and unnecessary. I know FindAGrave loves using the government areas etc., which probably stems from it being a predominantly American website.

Thanks, Jessica.  Yes, it is the reverse of what I had thought, thank goodness.

It's crazy. Nobody would look for a Dapto Cemetery in Wollongong.
So that one needs renaming then? Dapto Cemetery, Dapto, New South Wales? How does Australia Project deal with naming suburbs? Wikipedia says Dapto is a suburb of Wollongong.
Yes, please, Natalie

I think the Australia project is in the process of creating regional teams by states and territories, with one of the goals being to come up with geographical and location naming conventions. It is very true that we dont really use shire or city councils usually.

WA is divided up so many different ways, for a host of different reasons. We literally say up north, down south and in the wheatbelt for any town outside of Perth, and whether the town is north, south or east of the city.

Aussie folk! laugh

Definitely using local government areas in Aussie location structure would be counter-productive to easily finding a place name in Australia, if I was overseas, interstate, or even in my own state, I'd be expecting to find a town listed under the particular state. Any other divisions within a state would be  subject to changes over the years, and not recognisable to researchers.

There is one cemetery in the New South Wales hierarchy that has the city added as well as a location. That is Category: Dapto Cemetery, Dapto, Wollongong City, New South Wales . Editbot didn't name that cemetery but has adjusted the parent categories.

Looking at the cemeteries with Ryde in it's name there is no Ryde City or City of Ryde listed except on the linked FindaGrave cemetery pages which is not something Wikitree has control over.

Thanks for finding that one. See my comment to Steven Harris above, Darren.

Government Cemeteries are overseen by local trusts and boards, and the extra place names given must be the name of these administration areas.

Electoral boundaries are unrelated, and the ones we belong to vary between State and Federal levels.

Even though we don't use these on our postal addresses, these City, Shire, and/or County places are used in the place field on the many BDM certificates I have.
