Joseph Ballenger of Manakintowne not New Jersey?

I am trying to research the Ballenger family. Joseph Ballenger is listed on the Huguenot Manakin website as being one of the people the king sent over to Manakintowne in 1700. This would mean Joseph was most likely either born in France or in England.

I've found a Joseph Ballenger who was born in New Jersey and then migrated to Goochland (Manakintowne) County, Virginia. The problem is that if he was born in New Jersey, he could have been a Huguenot, but not a Manakintowne Huguenot.

I guess there were more than one Joseph Ballenger of that time period, but I would assume these two Joseph Ballengers have gotten mixed up. I don't think anyone who came in to New Jersey could qualify to be a Mankintowne Huguenot.

Any ideas?

Is it possible that the NJ Ballenger stayed in NJ or nearby?  I'm sure that there were multiple men at that time with the same or similar names.  And it is easy for someone without good research skills to assign a death date to one man that actually belongs to another.  See if you can track the movements of Mr. NJ.

Agreed. I think he stayed up there and that he didn't come to Goochland. That is another Joseph Ballenger - it will take work to separate all this out.
