Pre 1700 Reliable Sources South Africa

+4 votes

The Reliable Sources for pre 1700 profiles still needs to be completed.

Please add an answer with reference to one source. Should you have more than one source, for example five sources, please add an answer for each source, in this case five answers so that the merits/validity of each source can be discussed/evaluated separately.

Thank you in anticipation

First Fifty Years is a site that provides per-person information, usually with every online primary source that is available, often with its own on-site copy of that source. The information is supplied by respected albeit opinionated genealogists.

My only criticism is that in disputed issues, the opinion of those genealogists is inserted into the profiles as if established fact, with no indication that the issue is one on which there is more than one opinion. For example, the index entry for Kitsjel Dain Mamoedi directs one to the article on Jonker of Macassar, where a bland statement can be found that "7 December 1708, the name of Jonker was written in the record as Kitsjel Dain Mamoedi", an identification on which there is hot debate.

Dirk, I agree with you on especially those so-called "widely accepted by genealogists" opinions. I see WikiTree as stating the facts supported by primary sources as far as possible. Those opinions and disputes as well as secondary sources should resort under ==Research Notes==.on profiles.

Though 50-years do state a huge number of primary sources and was a huge undertaking(credit to the authors), they are a very good resource to start research from, but should not be regarded as an acceptable primary referenced source.
