I often see this in profiles, like in this example. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hache-30

Can we move <references /> directly  below ==Sources== without making a mess?

In this case, yes you can move it up under ==Sources== without causing any issues.

Wikitree has undergone several style changes. That particular profile was created in 2011:

Hache-30 created 13 Aug 2011

This issue comes up in the suggestion report and should be modified so that the <references /> tag is directly below the Sources heading.

But I don't check the locations of <references /> tag.

It should be after sources, but due to a style in 2011 there are many profiles, where it is not. And due to a number of them, and just cosmetic importance, it probably never will become a suggestion. I might program EditBOT to do that on the fly.

That'll create zillions of 868s.

A lot of existing 868s were created by somebody moving the <references /> tag, so hiding a footnote in a profile that previously worked.

And as you say, it's purely cosmetic, except in many cases, the result isn't even prettier.
I thought programming EditBot to do that would actually be a good idea. It's one of those changes that I like to fix.

Are 868s harder to fix than normal errors?
Flying EditBot, very cool.  Who would win? Flying Editbot or Superman.

There are videos explaining reference tags and related suggestions in the Data Doctors Video Library.

Please see the announcement: Data Doctors Proudly Presents

Hope this helps.

And the <references /> tag should always be directly under the Sources heading as you will see.  It cleans up the references, won't make a mess!
