Do you know any Sobels or Zobels?

Hi.  I'm Rich Sobel and I'm seeing how far back I can trace the Sobel/Zobel lineage.  I'm really interested in stories about the family as dates are kinda sterile, if you know what I mean!

I have traced my personal Sobel/Zobel lineage back to Elias and Bertha from the Russia-Poland-Ukraine-Czech area in the 1780s but know nothing at all about these people and where they might have come from, how the Sobel name came to be, etc.

If you think you can contribute to this project, please contact me or just do it!

The only one I ever heard of was Otto Zobel of Bell Labs, the inventor of the Zobel Network. Yeah right, so I'm an electronics nerd ...

You might also consider including Schobel in your research.

Thanks, Rob Judd.  Not a bad idea for the future to add that spelling as well.

The catholic church death record book for Bogendorf (Toten-Buch der kath. Kirche zu Bogendorf) in Schlesien shows death of Marie Elisabeth (nee ZOBEL) FERCHEN as 07 Nov 1816, age 69.   She was b. 1747.  Her husband was Bernhard FERCHEN (aka FERCHE): 1754 - 07 Jan 1825.  They operated a guesthouse in Bogendorf.   The church record is on microfilm at LDS facility in Salt Lake City, Utah, and supports the handwritten genealogy records my husband had on his 3x great-grandparents. I believe, but not positive, Bogendorf was in county of Schweidnitz.  There is interesting historical time line chronology of Bogendorf on-line. Hope this is helpful. Good luck.

I can't claim to know any of them personally, but here's Wikipedia's Sobels and Zobels and then there's Hermann Szobel

I have read two of Dava Sobel's books. Asteroid davasobel is named after her. And I've seen the PBS NOVA program based on her book Longitude.

Hi! I'm Eric Wolfgang, and I've got some Sobel blood from Brest-Litovsk, Belarus.  My great-grandfather Louis Sobel (b 1873) migrated to NYC in 1888.  His father was Abraham Issac Sobel and his mother was Lena Cochansky.  Abraham had at least one other daughter Mollie (Malke) with a second wife, Lillian Stein.

I don't know of any Elias or Bertha, but my tree does not go back nearly that far.  Do you know of any descendants who may have DNA tests we could compare?
