Why can I not merge Cotton-693 with cotton-3628 as they are clearly one and the same?

It will probably be a combination of both answers below - the privacy issue AND the fact that you are trying to merge a lower ID number into a higher ID number.

Merges always go from higher ID numbers into lower ID numbers. But as Greg said, you will not lose the Biographical data. You can choose which data you wish to keep.

I think it's because of the privacy settings.  Someone has to be on both Trusted Lists to complete the merge.  If you add Dan to 3628's TL, Dan can complete the merge, or you can do it if Dan adds you to 693's TL.  You will both end up as PMs on the merged profile, so there should be no objection to the Trusted List requests.

The system won't let you merge from a lower to a higher number, so if you're trying to merge Cotton-693 into Cotton-3628, try merging Cotton-3628 into Cotton-693 instead. (Don't worry if Cotton-3628 has more information: during the merge process you will be able to combine the information from both existing profiles into the merged profile.)
