In the majority, the East coast colonies were owned by England. What did good King George or his government call them? Most of the residents in any literature I have read considered themselves to be colonies of England.

George, no!  They did not in most cases see themselves that way - they went to get away from England and the religious constraint the felt there - some administrators in New Netherland were working for and answered to the Dutch company and there was a change when the English "won" - but then the Dutch carried on with their ways far after that - New England was mostly set up by those Puritans and Quakers and those seeking religious freedom - trade was still a big thing with England and Europe in general but the common citizen did not think of their homeland as "owning" the colonies they bravely settled from what I have read of things in early life this side of the pond - later of course when the revolution began some did stay loyal and fought the upstart new nation and then many fled to Canada - well it was not yet Canada I don't think, but that is what happened - no they were mostly called Province of ... before the start of the USA

Thanks for the history lesson but your arguments have little in fact to support your point. Are we to ignore historical legislative wordings? What are we to do with all of the period maps, just ignore them? The United States Declaration of Independence states more than once that they were " colonies ".. This comes right from the principle leaders involved. I can understand why this may upset a few. patriotic Americans as they are very proud of their history and rightfully so. No one should have licence to change history. I am Canadian but I take pride in my English, French and Irish ancestry. Renaming place names should be an  "outside the box.exercise thinking process", not a patriotic preference..

Well of course the rest were called Colonies!

you have:

Saybrook Colony, New Haven Colony and Connecticutt Colony - all parts of what would become Connecticut

Fincastle Colony and Transylvania Conony became Kentucky

Colony of Virginia became Virginia and West Virginia

and the Colony of Rhode Island along with Providence Plantations became Rhode Island

the rest went by Province of except Tennessee which was - in 1744 Watauga Association
