The mtDNA is passed from mother to child so ypur mother's mtDNA will echo her mother, then her mother, then her mother on back through the generations. Your mtDna and your mother's would be the same. The difficulty is that in most cases, each mother in each generation has a different maiden name and that make it more diffucult to track in the tradional sources.
An auDNA test might be more informative. With an auDNA test you can find matches across all of your recent ancestors (3 to 5 generations back or so). So mom would get an extra generation before your test, but your test would show possible cousin matches from your father's side of the family.
Which test to take really depends on what you want to learn. Here is a link to our WikiTree DNA Project which might help you decide. http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:DNA Also, here is a link to a little genetic family tree to give you an idea of how the different types of DNA are passed along the family tree. http://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/Cooper-1-1 I hope this helps your research!
