Suggestions of places to visit in Abaco that would be useful for my research of our family roots? Historic homes, memorials,  Any Cemeteries or libraries, etc..We are visiting Green Turtle Cay tomorrow, May 1 for only  a week. Any suggestions that I could learn for this trip. Definitely squeezed f in some fun but wanted to gain knowledge about our ancestors too.

Wendy, I added the 'Bahamas' tag to your post so that those following that would see your post.  I'm not sure how many people are aware of the location of the Abacos . . .  (Personally, I've visited there numerous times with my boat!)  Hope you have a great visit!

Hi Wendy:

Green Turtle Cay has a beautiful cemetery and the Albert Lowe Museum, which is a restored home with a great collection of records on Abaco history. If you get to Hope Town, Elbow Cay, Abaco, the Wyannie Malone Museum has a library and a wonderful genealogical database to investigate. Both islands are historical gems.

Happy travels.

Thanks. I did get into the Cemetery and read through the stones. Lots of Roberts and Lowes. It’s like a mini Key West Cemetery but without the iguanas. The museum was closed. Will try again Monday. Monday we’ll be heading back into Marsh Harbour and that will be my best shot to get to Hope Town. I came here with a long list and I got distracted with snorkeling, talking with locals and exploring this beautiful place.

The Wyannie Malone Historical Museum in Hope Town has very good genealogical resources for Abaco and Eleuthera.  Contact them before you arrive to be sure a volunteer is on duty (so that the museum will be open when you visit).

Wendy, most of our cousins are in the LOWE tag, not LOWES which is mostly German. You might want to add the CURRY tag, because our great × 3 grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Curry Lowe. My late uncle Maynard Lowe, Sr. visited the Albert Lowe House on Green Turtle Cay and enjoyed it. Our late 5th cousin Donald Scott Lowe and his wife Emily took the Keys Chorale to Green Turtle Cay years ago.

Your 3rd cousin, Vic Lowe

Thanks Victor. I’ll edit my tags when we get back. Having a wonderful time in Green Turtle Cay. It’s so beautiful. A week is not nearly enough and I’m dreading leaving Monday.  I’m pretty sure we saw Amanda Diedrick today walking her dog in New Plymouth this evening. Tomorrow we are supposed to look for a man named Albert Lowe who apparently sits everyday at the water and he knows a lot about the families. Lol. Love it.
Wendy,

Amanda Diedrick is a well-known author. I always get starstruck by famous people. She's my 5th cousin twice removed through John Roberts, Sr. and our 7th cousin through Richard Curry (born 1722) and Mary Thompson. I cannot find her exact connection to our Lowes on the family tree, but she mentioned she's a descendant of our great × 6 grandfather Matthew Lowe. Caroline Diedrick is my "predicted 2nd to 4th cousin" according to Family Tree DNA tests, with 71 shared centimorgans.
I will probably never get a chance to meet Amanda, but I can enjoy her work. My grandfather Victor Lowe was the city clerk of Key West, sister city of New Plymouth. All us cousins appreciate your dedicated work in ancestry research. Relax and enjoy your time on GTC, dear cousin. - Vic Lowe
