My Italian relative joined the US Navy in 1917 and later census' show him as naturalized - I can't find any papers for him, unlike his brothers who have naturalization records - but no US war service?

It wasn't automatic, but they did make it faster and easier for those in the military.  His military records might show naturalization, possibly on base.
