CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Greetings, WikiChatterers, to the Weekend Chat, from an unusually sunny Cathey’s Creek. I’m posting a little early, because I’ve got to get outside before the rain starts.

It’s only been two weeks since our last Chat, but it seems like a lot longer. The Clean-a-thon ruled last weekend with dozens of WikiTreers clearing over 130,000 DBEs. A shout out to TEAM ROSES whose members cleared over 26,000 DBEs! Well done, everyone!

On the home front: Most of what we are working on outside is repair of flood damage. Lots of fun, of course… NOT! We are making progress. The second heavy rain ate under the banks of our factory neighbor, so I asked for the removal of about four trees that are now leaning precipitously over the creek toward our property. They were very kind, visited us, took pictures of the trees, and said they’d get a tree company on it.

On the medical front 1: Two Mondays ago, the left side face swelled up like a pumpkin and the pain forced me to call my dentist… who was closed for the week. Called another and got in. X-rays showed that an infection had moved into my sinus. Amoxicillin for 10 days. Last Tuesday I had a root canal. When the Novocain wore off… let’s just say I wasn’t in screaming misery, but it was pretty bad. All fine now, and a post and crown are to follow.

On the medical front 2: On top of all that, I have a torn muscle (bicep) up near the shoulder. I had an MRI on Wednesday, and yesterday I got a cortisone shot (one of three options, another of which was surgery). I’m a little sore from the shot, but I can tell the difference already. Much of the last two weeks I was nearly incapacitated by the pain of tooth and shoulder, but there were a few days that I could get outside for chores.

On the genealogy front: No major breakthroughs lately. I participated in the Integrators Challenge, and participants created or improved over 1000 profiles mostly from the Needs Profiles Created category. This is the highest total of any Integrators Challenge. I did get a chance include new information on a former brickwall, change a LNAB, and add a set of parents (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lewin-456). Woohoo!

I hope all of you are well, you and those you love. Enjoy the Chat, everyone!

Thanks for hosting, Pip. Hope the medical problems get resolved. My wife had the rotator cuff surgery and has full range of motion back but it was a long recovery. She started with the cortisone shots which help for maybe a month. I hope they help you so you can avoid surgery.

Well I admire your endurance Pip, both physically(medical issues) and with dealing with your yard damage!! And still... you are out there working on WikiTree projects and helping people. Whata guy!! We are honored to have you among us and thank you for your devotion and dedication to WikiTree. yes

I've been adding "Michigan, Needs Profiles Created " to plenty of profiles for you Pip. You're welcome. cheeky

(Seriously though, I'd add the profiles but then I would never make a dent in the number of unsourced Michigan profiles).

Thanks for hosting Pip.  I feel your (dental) pain, there's not much worse!

I wish there was a way for the damp and flooding east to ship some of the extra water to the dry west coast, we're already on fire restrictions.  I'm thinking a pipeline over the rockies, with a massive soaker hose at the other end, but there hasn't been an environmental assessment yet.
Pip yes thanks for hosting and I agree with Doug and Dorothy on this part of the chat.

Welcome everyone to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.
Hi Pip, thank you for hosting and happy your feeling better. Now you have no excuses to fix the flood damages. :-)
@David: Hang on, I’m trying to come up with another excuse!

The tractor broke down, the mower stopped running, the wife took a break, the wheelbarrow had a flat, the chain saw through the chain. It is your choice Pip!! Just do not break a leg!!! enlightenedsmiley

David, I’ve used 2 1/2 of those. I might need to come up with some more! laugh

Laurie, imsure feel for you guys under the fire restrictions. The fires y’all have out there are always big news here as we have to keep our eyes on all the forest around here during dry weather. Wish I could send you some of this rain.

Here we have had plenty of rain and this weekend it stopped and has been sunny but rain to resume Monday through this coming week.

Glad it was a torn muscle and not the rotator cup, Pip, those take a lot longer to recover from and a lot of physical therapy after the surgery.

Anyone have any good free websites to find birth sources for in Oklahoma?

Have been staying busy at WikiTree working on the two projects I am co-leader of as well as working with members answering questions.

Have a great week and stay safe!!

Don't be reluctant to search out a Mentor if you need to. Just click on the Help menu and take it down to Mentors. Look for one who specializes in your area of interest. It seems to me to be promising so far.
by Frank Gill G2G Astronaut (2.5m points)

Thank you Frank! I did a posting for that during the CaT. Some of our members didn't understand how to fix the errors that we couldn't (their profiles weren't open). We help with a little bit of everything, not just problems smiley

Excellent advice, Frank. I hope more folks will take advantage of that group within our community. It really is in heir hearts to help WikiTreers.

There are no stopping Pip Marion he even sleep with his wikitree under his pillow if someone should ask for help. He is a fighter

Marion, WikiTreeing takes my mind off of lots of things, including the pain. Of course, I’ve been outside all day, so I’m paying for that now! sad There’s almost nothing that can keep me from WikiTreeing.

Pip there is for me and you will read it in my answer chat here. But I agree with you that will be me after I get my mom settled.

Howdy Pip and WikiTree at large!  Just wanted to say that I am glad that I am at home this weekend in sunny Florida, in fact, in the sunny Ocala National Forest in Florida!

I am recovering from a surgery with the help of our miracles that are done in modern medicine!  Our ancestors (including our parents!) did not have these wonderful advantages and I am so thankful I can!

This weekend, I am taking it slow, but going to do some WikiTreeing as I am awake!!  Everyone have fun this weekend doing whatever wonderful things that make y'all happiest!!

Today is....

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CUSTARD DAY!!

National Chocolate Custard Day is celebrated each year on May 3rd.

Custard is made by blending eggs with milk or cream and heating the mixture either on the stove or in the oven. There are a variety of custards with consistencies ranging from a thin liquid like a creme Anglaise to a firm creme brulee.

Chocolate custards are delicious on their own or can be fillings in eclairs, creme puffs, tarts, pies and cakes.

See also... this page for five facts about Chocolate Custard: https://foodimentary.com/2018/05/03/whos-in-may-3rd-is-national-chocolate-custard-day/

Yummy Dorothy you always make my mouth watering with your yummy

Cakes chocolate wow

I could eat that right now.
I do like a good custard and chocolate only makes it better!
Dorothy I agree with Susan and Doug here on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat.
Chocolate of any kind is good, I like chocolate custard.
Gotta try this, have my own eggs and milk (produced in my yard). I suppose I could grow the chocolate, but no idea how to process that.

This will be a treat for the weekend. Thank you Thank you Thank you
Growing a Cacao tree isn't too difficult if you have the right climate. I've thought about growing one indoors but don't have the room at the moment.  Growing outdoors isn't possible for me due to not being tropical climates. They are an interesting tree. The small flowers come out on the trunk and along the branches and not at the tips like most trees.  Processing isn't good difficult. See https://www.icco.org/about-cocoa/processing-cocoa.html for how it is done.
Chocolate - my very all time favorite!! Thanks for sharing this, Dorothy!!

Greetings, Cousins!

Pip, thanks for hosting!  Sad to hear about your root canal and torn muscle.  Positive vibes en route!

Congratulations to all the CaT people for a phenomenal success!

Having survived the tax deadline, I still squeezed in 100 contributions for April.  Most of them I found down the Moser rabbit hole.

Meanwhile, my work computer suffered a cooling-fan failure which has put her in drydock for a week or two.  Trying to work on my antique home computer has proven more challenging than expected.  But hey, the timing could have been much much worse!

Finally, life for me slowly returns to its more normal pace.  smiley

Thank you, Pip!  That was actually my first attempt.  blush  I think the break did me some good.

I was meeting with a client Monday afternoon when the machine made an ominous noise and shut itself off.  We both said, 'That can't be good.'  It refused to boot up Tuesday morning.  It's fixable, just waiting on a part.  Should be no data lost (all backed up anyway).

Ahh Grown up mutant ninja turtles...Heroes who pay taxes. Turtle Power!

Hope the comp issues get resolved, soon.
By my estimate, the lads are 50-ish now.  As for paying taxes, I couldn't say.
Oh, be fair.  They've barely cracked 35!  (TMNT issue 1 came out in 1984... I have the originals.)
They were teenagers in 1984, so they were born 1971 at the latest.  QED.
Well, they start off the issue as hatchlings, then grow up... but that may have been flashback.  Been a while since I've read it.  I'll concede the point.
Nice turtle, Herbert!
I agree with everyone here Herbert I been missing your paper projects on WikiTree Weekend chat since last September when real life really interrupted my life and my families life also. I am back you can start reading my WikiTree Weekdend chats that I have done when I started back I think in January of this year to catch up with my life and the real life antics.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Thank goodness there was no data lost!! I keep mine backed up as well - I'm terrified of losing research lol

Thanks, David!

Welcome back, Linda!

Gotta have backups, Mindy!  smiley

Greetings from the Irish Roots Team. Thanks for hosting this Pip. Great Job!

As some of you know, Irish Roots has been switching to Teams. In the process we have been reviewing everything we do and how we had been doing it. We've gone through most of our Categories and put together a new plan. Also we are working on some training and mentor Teams to help people navigate Wikitree's requirements. While building our Teams, we've discovered the Irish Roots interacts with a lot of other Projects and Countries. An example of this is our Diaspora Teams that will be coming soon.

If you're interested in what we are up to, check out our new Irish Roots Project page

by Richard Devlin G2G6 Pilot (505k points)
Richard, I’ve following the Irish Roots categorisation progress, and I have to say you and your team did an absolutely great job getting that in line. My hat is off to you! Well done!

Thanks Pip I appreciate that. But Most of it should go to Amy Gilpin and her Team. It just would not have been done without them.

I’m proud of all of you! It really was excellent work.

Weather has improved after our beginning of the week snow and cold. Yesterday improved and got into the 50s(10C) which was good since I needed to check on the bees to make sure the queens in the new hives got released. All was well. To day it is already above 50 and it isn't quite 9am. Before the snow came, my wife got the beets, carrots and radishes planted and potted some of the indoor seedlings into bigger pots. Another couple of weeks before it is safe to plant them outside (except the broccoli which will go out this weekend).

On the genealogical front, not much has happened. Mostly spent time on planning the clan society meeting and how to get the personal family reunion started. The town wide celebration is definite so now working logistics. Also did a bunch of Category work on WT and some work on Canadian profiles.
by Doug McCallum G2G6 Pilot (531k points)
Doug glad your weather has improved how much snow did you get?

Hopefully the carrots and radish will be great
Thanks, Susan. We hope the root veggies do well, too. Carrots did well last year but the beets didn't. Need enough to get most of the way through the winter.
Hey Doug, spring is on its way.  It's popping up into the 70s (20s) here, although it could still freeze for another week or two.  A couple of weeks ago I planted some Apache Plume for the local bees. I thought it was the least I could do, since I also deprived them of a patch of horehound they used to love.
Herbert, we're probably a few days behind you but a couple of weeks is about right. Apache Plume is quite nice. Was the horehound taking over or just needed a change? I'm putting in a big bed of agastache and some annual salvia for the bees. Need to get some earlier blooming stuff but the dandelions and mustard is serving them right now as well as the ornamental trees around the neighborhood. We had made 70s last week and it just hit 60 (15) here as I'm typing.
The horehound was spreading but not terribly quickly.  It first showed up a couple of years ago and I let it be.  Last fall the burrs exceeded my tolerance level so this spring I tried grubbing it out.  I hope I didn't just encourage it.
Garden sounds great. Where I used to live anything that was a root - like radish, carrot, beet - did great. Hope you have enough success with the beets to slaughter a few marble sized to eat some beet greens.
Glad you're finally getting some gardening weather!

Hi, Doug! We’ve decided against a garden this year (sad). Too much else is needing attention. But... the flooding we had seemed to feed all of our decorative landscaping plants. Our Red Hot Pokers came out like gangbusters! Also, our Japanese maples took off, as did our lilies and irises.

Hi Pip and fellow W'Ters. Pip, sounds like you need to take a break and heal up.

Things are great up here North of the Mason Dixon Line. Folks are planting flowers and mowing lawns. Life is good.

Right now on the tree I am getting a new member that shares a GG grandfather with me connected. Fun work.

I was impressed with over 500 members participating in the C A-thon. I think that is the most I have ever seen.

Hope everyone stays safe and has a great weekend.
by Rodney Long G2G6 Pilot (866k points)
Rodney Pip don’t know how to take a break, he are always working dry hard,

Pip is remarkable

So better weather Rodney glad to hear that.
Yes, it was good to hear from you today Susan. Here in Central Pennsylvania we are having typical spring weather now. My blueberries are blooming, my strawberries are blooming, I have my potatoes, cabbage, peppers and tomatoes planted. Next week I will plant some corn and green beans.
Rodney how fantastic with all the delicious things that are growing in your garden, must be fantastic

Strawberry yummy blueberry and all the wonderful things you have, I only have a balcony on three floor not room for gorgeous things like you have.

Do you have a big garden
I sent you a picture. See if it is in your email
Just saw it hVe reply on your mail Rod
Hello, Rodney! Seems like family los up your way and I are doing some of the same outdoors chores. For me, mowing takes at least two hours and I have to time it time it just before the rains. Otherwise, I’m facing knee high grass!
Would love to grow blueberries.I may yet but it requires special care. Our soil is almost a pH of 8. Blueberries want acid soil so i would have to use large rubs. The rest of your garden sounds great as well. We can't plant most things until after mid-May and most we wouldn't trust until June 1.
Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Hi Doug, I use a product called "Acidifier" for my blueberries and some of the other bushes. I use a small soil tester, and it is a challenge to keep it where it needs to be. Here in Central Pennsylvania I usually start watching the weather real close and plant accordingly with the tender plants. I have found starting around the first week in May keeps me out of trouble with any frost.
Hi Linda, hope all is well with you. Have a great weekend.
Rodney, even our water is very alkaline. We did talk to a berry expert and he grows them in bales of peat and transplants them every few years plus using an acidifier I'm thinking of using a large plastic pot like a tree would come in and using that for blueberries. Central Pennsylvania seems like a nice place. I mostly know the western part around Pittsburgh. We'll be there twice this summer.

Greetings WikiKin,

Here in beautiful metro-Detroit, it's been raining like cats and dogs most days for a weeks now. Our backyard is the low spot in the neighborhood (didn't realize that when we bought it) and we seem to have standing water in the yard nearly constantly. It isn't any where near as bad as what Pip has experienced, so I can be grateful for that.

Last weekend I mowed the lawn for the first time this year - the parts that's weren't underwater. We also visited friends of ours from college and met their newly adopted baby. He was very cute. We had a great time, and my children were better behaved there than they would've been at home.

On the genealogy front: I participated in the Clean-A-Thon a bit, but not nearly as much as I wanted to, my real life demanded attention.

I've been tackling unsourced Michigan profiles again this week. I've been keeping track of the number of unsourced Michigander profiles since the beginning of the year, and it was slowly trending in the right direction. During the Clean-A-Thon many people very helpfully added the {{Unsourced}} tag to the unsourced profiles that they clean-up, and now there are more unsourced profiles of Michiganders than when I started keeping track. sad Discouraging, but it's better those profiles that need it have the tag.

This weekend we don't have a lot planned. I think I'm going to focus on spending time with my little descendants.

by Thomas Fuller G2G6 Mach 9 (93.6k points)
TOM! How are ya? Sorry about the rain. Been raining here too in the Merrimack Valley. You and Pip keep dry~

Nice work on the MI profiles!

Have you seen Endgame?
Hi, Thomas! When it’s not flooding (!) and just the usual run-of-the-mill rain, there a large spot that gets missed due to standing water.

More unsourced in Michigan means more profiles that’ll get attention. (You don’t have to do them all!!)
Thomas, love the phrase WikiKin!!!
Tom, the rain was a good thing for me. It gave me a break from the garden. We normally get so little rain that I didn't want to complain. Which part of metro-Denver?
Chris: No, is it a movie? Edited to add: Oh, it's an Avengers movie. Not really into the franchise, but then, I've barely been to the movies since having kids.

Pip: I'm not trying to do them all. My current goal was/is to see the total go below 10,000. I did have about 600 to go, now almost a thousand. All in good time, I guess.

Robin: Me too.

Doug: Metro-Detroit. Not Denver. We have tons of water, fresh water. We call it a drought when we have to step down off a dock to get into our boats.
In Tennessee they said that we have had the wettest and set the record for the wettest year starting in January since the started recording the weather.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
I’m right across the border, Linda, and we set rain records here, too. Asheville, only 35 miles away, missed their record by maybe an inch.
Yesterday I seemed to have misread lots of thing. Sorry about that. I blame it on the allergies that were triggered by our couple days of cold snow/rain and the quite warm.

Thanks for hosting Pip and get well soon. The last two weeks have not been fun here either. My son in law was working on my daughters car the week before the clean a thon and something moved. He cut his index finger, tearing the nail off and the cut required 6 sutures. but to make things even worse he broke his finger in two places. the latest doctor said no work until after his next visit and that is May 17th. I worked the Maple Festival last weekend and somehow strained my left knee requiring a trip to the ER. That is slowly improving but I an still using a cane to walk around. We did get a couple of people interested in our upcoming classes and we made radio contact with several stations in the Florida area at the festival. Then just this last Wednesday my 90 year old father fell in his yard and could not get up. He was out in the yard for over 2 hours before some called 911 and the rescue squad took him to the ER. He is mostly fine with only a skinned knee but as you can imagine WikiTree was the furthest thing from my mind since the last chat.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)

My father was told by his doctor today that they want to see him in November. I guess that means he is doing OK for his age.
That's good news Dale!

When the doctor tells me in May that he wants to see me in November, I'm pretty sure I have six months to live.

I hope you all three heal quickly and well.
So sorry to hear about your injury, Dale. Know the feeling. I have a knee that thinks it doesn’t have to obey the brain, and goes one way when he rest of me is going the other. We keep canes around just for incidents like that.

Did the weather hold for the whole of the festival? I was hoping it would.
Hope you and the others recover quickly.
Dale I know what you mean especially with parents what the problem when we lived in Loudon, Tennessee before moving up here my mom would wait till about 2 to 4 hours before calling the EMT that lived in the neighborhood and said when ever they fall no matter what time it is to call him and he will come up and help get them up. But my mom is so independent she would try to get up by her self and then finally in about 4 hours after falling when she would fall she would call him. She is so independent and stubborn. But I know and agree with everyone on this chat.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Pip, the weather was OK. It was nice except tor Sunday morning when it was very cold but by afternoon the sun came out and it warmed up a bit.

Every one in the family is slowly getting better, it just takes time.
Either of those two gentlemen in the second one might be you?
No I was taking the pictures, also they are younger than I am. By the way the computer is capable of controlling the radio right down to even turning it on and off and that was a big draw for the visitors. The wrap up meeting for the festival committee was the other night and I just got word that they want us to expand our presence next year and actually patrol the festival grounds.

Happy weekend, everyone!  Grey and rainy here, perfect for WikiTreeing, but I'm going to have to focus on work instead.  End of semester stuff piling up.  A couple of major committee tasks, two exams to write, some grading, etc.  And yet here I am.  laugh  I've started OT for my wrist and I'm allowed to take the splint off when I'm just hanging out at my desk, so I'm back to two handed typing!

Lots of genealogy happened in the past couple of weeks.  Our adopted mystery cousin (paternal 1C to my mom) gave me access to her match list and I was able to immediately see that she's a half sib to another 1C.  So I figured out her father very quickly, and then looked at her matches that aren't shared with us to see if I could help her find her mother.  She has a 1C on that side, too, and between that and some other sleuthing I've been able to narrow it down to two sisters (our of 11 sibs and two half sibs).  Progress!

Meanwhile... what's the opposite of breaking through a brick wall?  I think I'm building one.  My paternal line paper trail goes deep back to colonial Rhode Island, and despite that I have only one distant DNA match tied to that area.  Hmm.  I had my brother do a Y-37 test and he only had one closeish match, with a different surname and no Rhode Island connection.  Hmm again.  Then this week I was contacted by someone else descended from that Rhode Island family.  He has also done Y testing and has many close matches, some with our surname and descended from our Rhode Island ancestor.  They're in a completely different haplogroup than my brother.  Moving from Hmm to Uh oh.  My great grandfather was born out of wedlock and then his birth was legitimized by the state, but now I'm starting to think it was actually an adoption, and his supposed father isn't actually his father.  I'm hoping to use WikiTree's DNA confirmation function to organize the info on these other Y testers to see how far back their lines are really verified.  And I'm tracing my closer ancestors forward to see if I can find other people to test.  I'd like to see if I can find where the possible break is in my paternal line.  And then see if any of my distant unknown DNA match clusters tie into this.  Another mystery to solve!

by Lisa Hazard G2G6 Pilot (264k points)
Ah, the end of the semester grind. Good luck, Lis! Finals are never fun. Especially for the people taking them! Good luck with your wrist!

Congrats on the dna match. Like I said in my post, I got a new match as I was typing something and I found out where she went pretty easily. Saw her tree. Saw her mom's name. I was like "Oh! I know where to put you!"

I like it when it's painless like that. Others who are close and I have no idea where they go? Not so much. Turns out she descends from my grandfather Hamel's sister, Pauline. We talked on Ancestry for a bit. Her brother is friends with my uncle on Facebook. It's a small world after all....=)

Congrats on your finding! The opposite of breaking through a brick wall is umm....Construction? I don't know.
From one mystery to another!  I'm looking forward to the next installment, and humming Mamma Mia tunes.

I know you’ll be glad, Lisa, when the semester is over. Did you sign up for summer school?!? surprise

Nope!  We're not obligated to teach in the summer and many folks focus on research instead.  Though my summer research may involve chromosome browsers and census records...  (Still trying to finagle a way to get "credit" for all of this at work somehow... at the moment I'm listing it as community service.)
Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Thanks, Linda!
OK, major committee task is done for now (and in other peoples' in boxes), and the exam is drafted.  Still lots to do, but I can take a break and watch the Star Wars Muppet Show episode.  May the fourth be with you!

Currently, it's 7˚C in Fort Erie, looking for a high of 12˚C. It's overcast, and while it's not currently raining, we do expect more rain before the day is over. (Since I'm hoping for a couple of dry days in a row to give the swamp in our backyard a chance to try out so I can attempt to mow it for the first time this year, I'm kind of ambivalent about that: one the one hand, I probably need to mow the lawn soon-ish, but on the other hand, I don't like mowing the lawn much [mostly because the ground is so uneven that twisting my ankle seems pretty much inevitable].)

For the past little while, I've been trying to pay attention to my poor, neglected Slade Name Study. I started a "Can you connect a notable Slade?" thread a while ago, and it's really helping to move the needle on getting Slades from Wikipedia onto WikiTree. There are only six people to go. (That I know of. I've found Slades who aren't listed on the "Slade (surname)" entry, so there may be still more whom I haven't found yet.)

Another needle that's moving (much more slowly, because there are so many more Slades involved) is making sure that all the Slades listed on ThePeerage.com are also on WikiTree. I also write to Darryl when I find sources or connections that he doesn't have up yet.

The slowest needle of all is making sure that all the Slades listed on SladeGenealogy.net are also on WikiTree. (Well, they aren't, since the last time I asked, there were 11,657 Slades on SladeGenealogy.net, and there are only 2,098 Slades on WikiTree, so there is a lot of work still to do there, and it takes about 100 profiles to move that measure 1%. Too bad I can't clone myself. I figure if there were about 1,000 of me, we should get the job done in jig time. On the other hand, that would raise our grocery bill considerably, and probably annoy my wife no end.)

Still, all the measures are heading in the right direction, however slowly, except for one. For some reason, the percentage of Slades who are connected to the main tree has gone down in the past couple of months. I must figure out what to do about those unconnected Slades. Posting a "Can you help connect an obscure Slade?" thread doesn't seem like it would work, somehow...

Slade Names Study Progress

by Greg Slade G2G6 Pilot (678k points)
Just remember that it is easier to run the lawn mower than the snow blower!

Sounds like the Slade study is keeping you busy.
Take heart Greg, measures are tricksey, particularly on Friday.

When I started on WikiTree, I knew my parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and 13 of 16 2nd-great grandparents, or 90% of 30 possible ancestors. Today, the stats tell me that I have identified (and sourced) 541 of 1022 ancestors.

I could say that I went from 90% to 52%, and not making any progress at all.
Busy as a bee. I don’t know how you do it. I need to be more retired than I am! All I can say is you are doing your darnedest to make the WikiTree Slades the best.
Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat

It's not hard, Pip. All I have to do is neglect all the things that I should be doing, and spend every waking moment on WikiTree. wink

That sounds too familiar!

Hi Pip, Thank you for hosting again! I hope that your healing goes quickly.

Same ol', same ol' here... rain and more rain again. Good research weather though. I think everyone is finally rested and back on track after the Clean-a-Thon. What a blast that was!! I co-captained this year for the Virginia Spring Cleaners - we cleaned 11,253 errors! WooHoo! Congratulations to everyone that participated for being a part of that massive effort - 132,553 errors total for WikiTree. Impressive!

My youngest daughter and my youngest grandbaby will be coming this week to visit so I don't think I'll be on 24/7 but I'll still work on WT in the wee hours. I'm just so excited to see them - the grandbaby just turned one and I can't wait to see her in person again. We had a marvelous video chat again yesterday - her aunt's phone was covered in drool after she kept 'kissing' me ... she really makes me laugh.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Oh - and I got my Portugal Project Newsletter posted to the forum. I was worried about it being late due to the CaT but the third of May isn't bad laugh

I need to poke Maranda and see if we can get a cool newsletter like that. *sigh*

It's raining here, too. April Showers seem to be having a generous grace period. Well, I know we'll eat those words soon once summer hits. Congrats again to the clean a thoners!
Mindy, we’ve had two weeks without rain (will be raining tomorrow), but we in Rainsylvania (Transylvania) know how you feel!

Aren’t visits with descendants great? We had our newlywed daughter and son-in-law last weekend, and it was great. First time we’d seen them since the wedding. Laughed the whole weekend. I hope you do, too!
Mindy, enjoy that daughter and granddaughter all you can as they grow up way to fast. Here it has rained for what seems like a week and is raining as I post this. Tomorrow is suppose to be the better day with the rain stopping early in the morning. Monday we are going to our granddaughter in-laws for lunch and our daughter in law and her sisters will be there from Oregon and I will get to talk to them about genealogy and their ancestors that they sent me a copy of the CD their father created about the family and ancestors. Have a great weekend!
David, I’ve been watching the weather news, and you folks have been getting socked this spring! Be safe down there in Texas!
Pip right David.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat

Get to poking Chris! wink They are a nice way to engage and update people.

I bet your visit was great Pip!! I love my time with my girls, so I know it will be fun.

Thanks David - you guys have had rougher weather than us lately! I'm just ready for the sun to shine for more than half a day. Enjoy your lunch!! That sounds like fun smiley

Happy weekend to all and sundry. I'm living in relative luxury this week, having abandoned my yacht to stay at my brother's place for a few weeks. He goes in for an operation next week and needs me to drive him to and from the hospital.

This week I gained pre-1500 certification, and the first thing I did was add my oldest documented (suspected) ancestor. He is right here.

No doubt there will be Star Wars repeats playing tonight after the actor who played Chewbacca passed away, so I'll say just it: May the 4th be with you!

by Robert Judd G2G6 Pilot (134k points)
And with you!  Congrats on the pre-1500. Enjoy the extra elbow room, and best wishes for your brother's speedy recovery.
Off the yacht?!? Will you survive? Really, hope all goes well with your brother. And congratulations on getting your pre-1500!
Congratulations on the Pre-1500 certification and wishing your brother well and a speedy recovery.
Ditto to what everyone said here.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Well done on the pre 1500 cert.

When I looked at the profile for John Judde, I wondered if he would have witnessed the building of the Cathedral. The answer is no, it was already over 100 years old when he was born (though it would be another couple of centuries before the spire was added. ) Salisbury is one of my favourite places. Its just an hour away and  as my daughter lives there, I get to visit often.

loved my visit to Salisbury oh so long ago (1980). That’s where I bought my first personal copy of The Lord of the Rings. Such a beautiful place.

Root canals suck. I hope you feel better, man. Take it easy, soldier. Sorry I'm a little late. I was busy seeing the biggest blockbuster ever. Summer has finally arrived! Go see Avengers: Endgame! It's the pinnacle of 11 years of Marvel films. More movies are on the horizon. But, check this out if you haven't already. Avengers Assemble!

On the genealogy front, I haven't done too much as I was working on my #52Ancestors post: https://arlhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/04/52-ancestors-week-18-road-trip.html

I helped the Forest Elf clean up some of the dreaded Decoursey Gedcom. I saw that Team Roses won the thon this weekend. I need to join a team. Being a solo act isn't fun.

A funny thing happened though. Blaine posted a thread on his page about how he organizes DNA matches. I put in my own two cents and no sooner did I finish did I get a new DNA match for my mother and I. That was pretty cool. I messaged her and we talked.

I also talked to a second cousin who I already knew about on Facebook. We shared trees. She is new to Ancestry. So, I showed her the ropes.

Now I need to collect my thoughts for a vlog. Not gonna spoil the endgame. GO SEE THE MOVIE! I don't care if you're in a car or in a plane. Go see it!

Loved Endgame and need to go see it again... there was so much going on!  My spoiler-free comment:  Best example of lampshading (google it) I've seen in a long time.

Very cool that you found a new cousin.  I saw that post from Blaine but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.  (Also, did you see that GEDMatch can now do clustering?  Haven't had time to try it yet but it looks promising.)
Perhaps Lampshading is a good way to describe it. It was a great movie, though! We are likely going to see more Avengers movies I am sure. Plenty of Avengers out there.

His videos are good and man his mic is awesome. All I have is a condensor mic. Then again mine is kind of old at this point. I got it in 2011. It may not be as good as it used to be.

I saw Gedmatch has a new clustering thing. It's nice. It's not as tidy as I'd like it but it's decent. =D
The Decoursey Gedcom?!? Where angels fear to tread!! Take extra armor.

I have yet to see the latest edition of the Avengers. Sounds like a date my wife will love. (I ain’t going by myself!)

Whatever it takes.

I was just as surprised as you to find Decourseys attached to my 3x great-grandmother, Eulalie.  Her siblings and their families were generated by the gedcom. I THINK I got them all. I'm not sure. I may have missed it. I did source a few. You can see my handiwork on Henrietta Bibeau and her childrens' profiles. Some I found info on. Some? Not so much.

Check it out! I cleaned them up as much as I could.

Go see Avengers. Don't go on a full belly. Don't order popcorn and a drink. You won't want to miss ANYTHING!

Chris Team Tennessee Volunteers would like to invite you to their fun team during CAT'S, SCAN - A - THONS, and SAT's too.

Welcome everyone to the Spring WikiTree Weekend Chat
Actually, I might join Team Roses or Nor'Easters. Haven't decided.
I don't do the thon's so joining a team is not for me. I dislike the thons because doing things fast is not how I roll, I prefer slow careful work over speed. The DeCoursey Ged has popped up on my watchlist from time to time and I do what I can when I can but I don't believe in looking for trouble so I don't seek it out.

As for the Avengers, I am sure that once it is available on video my son in law will buy it so I am going to wait until then.
I only dealt with it because it was in my neck of the woods. It annoyed me. So, I did some digging on FS, copy/pasted sources which confirmed or denied some of the things the Decoursey gedcom had. Funniest/stupidest part of the gedcom was how it had a DNA match of mine on there....listed as dead. I found it just after I e-mailed him! Creepy, much?

Watch it when you can. I filmed a vlog. It's Spoilerific, though. Dunno if I should post.

No post! No post! We’re going to see tomorrow afternoon. Four o’clock showing. (Care to join us? wink)

Sure! I'll be right over! =D

So sorry you have been in the wars, Pip. I hope you are feeling better soon.

It is the beginning of autumn (fall) here in New Zealand. Days are warm, but  nights are much cooler although we have yet to have a frost. I worked all last week, so have done little on the tree this week since my debacle at the Clean-a-Thon when nothing I did on my iPad registered. (Shoulder shrug.) I have been contacted by a family member who has a massive tree for one line. However, there are no sources attached! This is the line I have avoided as they are Riley/O’Riley/Reilly etc and every possible name variant you can think of. One branch spends time in South Africa for added confusion. I’m still considering what I do with this mass of information.  I’ve also had emails from my son’s partners mother who found a profile. We share a family ancestor name, but are unrelated. I felt a bit of a “know all” when I knew more about her family than she did. I will use her hints to add some other profiles.

And I finally found the connection for Sir William Larnach through a marriage on Stewart Island (the little island at the south of New Zealand). It took me over a month and 40-50 profiles, but it’s quite satisfying.

Our Weather is running opposite, Fiona... finally! It was a long, cold winter. Hey! I’ve got some Rileys in my family. You wanna tackle them?
No thanks, Pip. My lot are tricky enough. I just wish they’d been consistent at least with the spelling of their own children’s surnames.

Hi Everyone!! I decided I  needed a break. I just uploaded and coded my 3rd Jester Newsletter that I compiled in the late 80s and early 90s. 9 more to go. Linking profiles is going to be next. Because I'll be needing to create several of them. Over 840 Jester profiles and haven't even scratched the surface or so it seems.
by Lynette Jester G2G6 Mach 8 (85.0k points)
Lynette, I feel the same way about family yet to be profiled. So much to do, so little time! Hang in there.

Thanks for hosting Pip. Sorry about the tooth (root canal is no fun) and the shoulder. Yet despite it all, you just keep on WikiTreeing.

We seem to have gone directly from spring into way too hot here in Virginia. The green beans and squash are up, and the tomatoes want some water. Today we went to the new Wegman's grocery store that just opened in our area. It was super busy, but I was able to get some Syracuse Salt Potatoes and a couple of other Central New York goodies (Hofmann White Hots).

Genealogy wise, the CAT was fun but tiring. I picked a hard one (134 - no dates, dates on relatives) so sourced about as many as corrected. Other than that I have been working on adding the descendants of my ggg grandmother Mary Rood. Just yesterday I added a daughter-in-law, and posted on G2G as I thought someone might want to take a run with her father's will to add him and connect to her grandfather's and uncles profiles which need some work.

Enjoy the weekend everyone!
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (597k points)
Kay, what's a Hofmann White Hot?
Hofmann’s since 1879. White hot or snappy griller, known locally in central New York as a coney is like a white hot dog, natural casing made from pork and veal. Tastes like a mild weisswurst.

Google Heid’s of Liverpool.
That sounds delicious!
Kay, are you admitting to staying up long hours of the night with a thermos of coffee to keep you going during the CaT? Or did you just pick the hard DBEs to do? Either way, it’s time for just regular WikiTreeing without all the pressure, or... maybe even a vacation!

We have a farmer’s market here. It’s small, but we find unique things there that we can find in the stores, or better variations of what’s in the stores. Lots of roadside farm stands around here.

May is one of my favourite months!  Reading all these posts, I'm thinking of Florida, Maui, swimming turtles and fresh lettuce ... but I'm actually packing my bag for a different type of adventure. This weekend, I'm off to Iqaluit, on Baffin Island (find it on a map), literally in the Great White North.

I should be able to connect to the internet from time to time, otherwise I'll check in later in May, hopefully with pictures.

Laurie, I Hope you have a blast in Baffin. Let us know how things went when you get back.
