I am connie casilear mitchell, a direct descent from John Casilear the Hudson River Painters.  Hm researching the line but cannot connect thomas casilear cole to my line so wondering where is middle name came from?

Middle names can come from various sources and for different reasons.

Several suggestions come to mind:

1) family name of ancestors

2) could be from a person admired or known to the parents who named the child

3) could be just a name that the parents thought sounded good.

That's just a few ways that I can think off

Where I have seen this in my family lines it is the Surname of either the mother or of either grandmother.

In the case of a surname as a middle name for a baby girl, it can be the name of her maternal grandfather.

When she marries her own children could be given her father's name to keep the name alive in her line of descendants just like her mother did with her.

I think Thomas Casilear Cole (1888-1976) was named after Thomas Cole (artist 1801-1848) and John William Casilear (artist 1811-1893) both of the Hudson River School. Thomas C. Cole was born in Staatsburgh, New York, USA in 1888 and was my second cousin. How he connected and eventually became part of the Hudson River School of artists I still don't seems ironic that his parents would give him that name and voila he becomes an artist...I think Thomas Cole was a relative...still working on that though.
