DNA Category Update

+4 votes

I've taken a swag at a DNA category and process.  I think it will work for us but I need feedback. To help us be consistent here is what I have in mind.

For an ancestor that you have DNA results for you need to do the following:

1. Create a section heading within the profile for == DNA ==

2. Within that section place the name of the Haplogroup and it's appropriate wikipedia link.

3. enter the profile for y-DNA(male) or mtDNA(female) from either ysearch.org or mitosearch.org as is appropriate (this is FREE)

4. add the category [[Category:DNA]] to the bottom of that profile

Please check out John Burke's profile for a sample [[Burke-1012]] and give me feedback.

Does this make sense or should we do something different?

Since I am new to WikiTree, I only have hunch here, but I suspect that testing companies like FTDNA and 23andMe have folks who share DNA data to compare in modest numbers, but far fewer use affliated sites like ysearch.org and even fewer use interesting sites like gedmatch.com. My further hunch is that folks are more likely to share family history and use genetic genealogy data under those bailiwicks then in a free flowing web-crawled wiki setting.

A modest proposal for WikiTree to put a web foot in these waters so to speak would be to allow an [[ Interest in DNA testing ]] in one's profile, but not make the jump to amend all prior generations with the same category in the spirit of caution about certainty of family data.

Anyways, my comment is to support John's posting and to keep a dialog going on taking steps forward for this DNA Category project idea.
