I wanted to share this family photo of James Ross with the community. Location: unknown. Date: .

Some stylish men who all emigrated from the Scottish Highlands to New South Wales on the Asia 1839 as part of the government bounty scheme. They don't grow them like this any more.

Thanks for sharing Simon;

Dingwall is close to where I believe my Ross ancestors lived.

Yeaow!  Looks like they are getting ready for a way.  If I'm not mistaken, 2nd guy has a sword in his hand.  There are so many fine details in this pic, I could really get a long look at it.  Do you have a higher resolution scan?

Great pic, thanks for sharing!

Full resolution:  Ross Men

Photo is not well focused.  However object appears to be rounded like a walking stick or cane.  It's possible that John is holding it for his father.

I'm guessing this is photo is from 1867-1872.

These guys were squatters and moved to Queensland as part of the failed Conoona Gold Rush in the far north of New South Wales before Queensland had been formed as a colony. The old guy Andrew brought his children over on a leaky ship in 1838/39 and did not really like what he found in Sydney and kept moving north, I don't see them as so serious in this photo and they definitely have some character to them.

This photo is of Highlanders in Australia as opposed to Scotland. That is why I found it so interesting. It has really made me more interested in learning more about my Highlander relatives
