In The Aspinwall Genealogy, Samuel Estabrook is described as having first married Rebecca Aspinwall, January 23 1766 in Mansfield, Connecticut. The Connecticut vital records support this. They have 8 children listed in the book. However, I have found that all 8 children have their mother given as Molly Mason on the New Hampshire Birth and Christening Records. I have not found any marriage record for Samuel Estabrook to Molly Mason, and other than the mother's name on the birth records, the timeline of his marriages and children's birth dates make sense.
Is the book wrong? Are the records somehow wrong? I do know that there is at least one likely error in the book - The death of Samuel's son Samuel is given as 1823, but I know that Samuel Sr. was actually the one who died in 1823. I am working on a theory that Samuel Jr. moved to Danville, Vermont and was one and the same as this Samuel Estabrooks, but that is beyond the scope of this question.
When I look at the image for the birth record for Rebekah Estabrooks, for example, the mother's name is given as Molly Mason, in parentheses. What might the parentheses indicate? The records for other children also include parentheses.
