Here is a Halloween costume party photo from 1920 at the Sternbergh family home called Stirling, in Reading, PA.  My great-grandmother is seated at the far right. I think the woman standing next to her is my grandmother, Ruth.

That is a nice picture. Thanks for sharing

wonderful photo of your grandmother and his brother they both look so cute

In there lovely outfit and very serious

Thank You for sharing
Thanks Susan for your kindness.  I think they both look a little ticked off for having to pose in those lace collars.  lol
So cute! I bet they didn't enjoy having to stay still for the photo though!
I love these old photos that show how people used to dress little boys. Your great grandfather looks all boy even with a lace collar, and Clifford looks extra cute with his big lace collar and a lace underskirt. Thanks for sharing this wonderful photo.

My mother dressed as Carmen Miranda, for Halloween in the 1950's.  I didn't remember the "occasion" for this, but when I flipped it over tonight, I found she had labeled it.  I remember the skirt was red and medium blue, and the basket on her head was filled with wax or plastic fruit.

by Lynn Bensy G2G6 Mach 2 (21.5k points)
Love this photo of your mother. I was such fan of Carman Miranda. What a fabulous jacket, it must have a history. Thanks for sharing this.
What an Adorable Mother you have all dress up

As Carmen thank You for sharing Lynn
What a hoot of a photo!  Thanks for sharing.
What a great job she did. Carmen, she is!
Love the bowl of fruit on her head.  Funny photo!  Thanks for sharing.
This is so much fun!
Oh...I remember watching Carmen Miranda on old B& W television! I was just a kid and fascinated by her costumes, dancing and songs. Thanks for the memories! Carol (Baldwin-3428)

This is an April 1911 photo showing my grandmother Pearl McCleery and two of her girl friends dressed up for a Civic Club Costume Party. My grandmother is on the right dressed up as a child holding a bear and a doll. Pearl is actually 24 when this photo was taken in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

gorgeous photo of your grandmother and her friends Alexis,

The look like they have fun together

Thank You for sharing
Thank you Susan. I think you are right; it looks like they are having fun.
Very cute.
You're right: that is both fun and funny!
Thank you SJ.
Thank you Stephen. I think it is interesting that women evidently liked dressing as men back then.
Think of it as getting one over on the Patriarchy!  My daughters would approve.
Stephen, I have a feeling you are exactly right. Bet you have been a great father for your daughters.
Lovely long hair, and wonderful picture as always! Do you still have the bear?
No Cheryl, I don’t have the bear. I do have one of her dresses that is from the 1920s. I have thought about getting one of my granddaughters to put it on for a photo. Thank you for the comment.
What a great photo Alexis.  Thanks for sharing it.
Wonderful photo!
Thank you Caryl.
Thank you Laurie.

The wedding of my grandmother's sister Millie in 1927. My grandfather (far left) looks way better than I ever remembered him. As a bricklayer, he always wore old clothes.

When my Dad received his second Army Commendation Medal from Gen Mayo, Chief, US Army Finance Corps, we all got dressed up and went to the Pentagon for the ceremony.  We even got to skip school! Having lunch at the Pentagon Officer's Mess was always a treat.

by L. Ray Sears G2G6 Mach 5 (50.7k points)
Thank you L. Ray for sharing this great photo. You look very much your dad, both of you are very good looking. What beautiful smiles!
What a handsome photo; what a handsome family!  Yup, on the medal, the dark spot on the center of the ribbon is a bronze oak leaf cluster signifying that it is the second award of the medal.

This medal has had an interesting transformation in the last decade - now it can be awarded with a "C" device signifying that it was awarded because of specific combat action versus non-war action.

Thanks very interesting. I didn’t know about the “C” device. After nearly twenty years of war in Afghanistan you know our soldiers have seen it all.  This is military appreciation month   https://www.uso.org/stories/1978-here-s-5-simple-ways-you-can-support-the-uso-during-military-appreciation-month Not very many folks in the US have a very good understanding of of our war fighters and their sacrifices

Nice picture, and I would like to thank you, for your father's participation in the service.

You have received some interesting comments, but I really think he deserves accolades for his service. We just don't give enough respect to our veterans anymore!

Thank you for this wonderful picture!
Thanks Cheryl - yes we are very  proud. He first joined the Navy in Jun 1946 after a year of college and then when Korea started he joined the Army Coast Artillery, then the Anti-Aircraft Artillery and finally  retired after a tour in Vietnam and 30 years service as a Major General in the Finance Corps.  Our family moved so many times i can barely count them.  This really is a month to appreciate our military!
Thank You L for sharing this wonderful photo of your dad receiving a medal

by Susan Laursen G2G Astronaut (3.0m points)
Susan this is such a wonderful photo. She is beautiful, and her dress that represents her town in Denmark is certainly lovely. I have always been fascinated by the way people dressed in different countries.

I really wanted to find a photo of someone in a costume, but I had no luck.

So here is my great-grandmother, Maud, with her friend Ina, in the late 1920s. They're probably about sixteen years old, and I'm sure they carefully considered every piece of their coordinated outfits, from their hats to their shoes.

When Maud had her hair cut into a bob, her father didn't approve, and he told her she'd have to wear a hat. She did, I guess, but she looks okay with the hat.

Around this same time, Maud spent her days working in a pencil factory. But she's not in her work clothes now, and I bet she felt pretty and fashionable.

by Jessica Hammond G2G6 Mach 3 (34.5k points)
edited by Jessica Hammond
It would be a costume by today's standards ;-)
It's great, but where is it?  They look like they're on a farm but there must've been a factory close by.
Good question! Maud's parents had a farm in Strafford, Missouri, and I know she worked for Springfield Cedar Company when she was eighteen. Springfield is about ten miles from Strafford.

I also know she liked to go to barn dances. That's how my great-grandparents met. So maybe Maud and Ina are standing outside at a barn dance.
Love this photo! Thanks for sharing it!

Great Uncle Ed, dressed up to go to War: he was a veteran of the Philippine-American war at the turn of the Century (1900).

by SJ Baty G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)
Is that really an American uniform?  They look so different by 1917.

Think back to the uniforms of the Indian Wars:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=army+sergeant+blue+uniform+indian+wars&t=brave&iar=images&iax=images&ia=images

It was after the turn of the century that we started to see green uniforms.  When rifles were able to reach out 500 meters, a bright blue uniform was a hazard on the battlefield.

Gosh, They're still wearing Union blue woolen uniforms in the Philipines?  Must have been nice and warm!

My grandfather was shipped to the South Pacific in WWII in a long wool trench coat, wool pants, wool jacket...

And by 2003 they still hadn't learned.

What was it Rumsfeld said? "We go to war with what we have, not what we want." surprise

Thank you SJ for such an informative photo, as I have to admit that I know nothing about this war. Also your great uncle is a really handsome man!

I believe that he went over in blues and acquired whites after he arrived, or these could just be the dress white (mess, or dining) uniform - the back of this photo has a photographer's advertisement for Manolo's photography in Manila:

In looking at the photos of the soldiers in war, seems half are in blues and half in khaki/greens.  I wonder if they got there, started cooking and called for new uniforms?

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=us+soldiers+in+philipine+american+war&t=brave&iax=images&ia=images

Wow SJ your great uncle Ed look fantastic thank You for sharing all the wonderful photos
Thanks for the education about the uniforms from 1900.  I did not know!  Great photos of a handsome man.  Thanks for sharing.

My Grandpa, Harold Knott Rammel, and Grandma, Oma M Allison-Rammel, had very similar photos when they were about 5 years old.  Hal was 3 years older than Oma.  And they would not have known each other at the time the photos were taken.

My grandmother, her sister and friends on the porch in New Orleans in about 1913.  My grandmother is the one dressed as Huckleberry Finn!

Odette and Haydee

by Stephen Trueblood G2G6 Mach 7 (75.3k points)
What a terrific photo!  I love it!  My best memories, when I was a little girl, were dressing up with my friends!
Cute picture!  I could sharpen it up a little, get rid of much of that haziness if you want.

My great-aunt Odette looks to me like she's shy and unsure and later she didn't marry.  My grandmother has that look in her eyes that she had until she died.  The look when she was about to say something particularly acute or waspish!  And always accompanied by that half grin.

Rob,  how does that work?  Stephen
I really love this photo of your grandmother sister and friends the all look wonderful thank You for sharing Stephen
Precious photo!  I love it.  Thanks for sharing it with us.
I download the image to my computer, play around with it a bit, then upload it someplace, like the freespace page for this thread, and then you can do what you want with it.  I like to pick a promising picture occasionally and try to clean it up, I just don't want to change a picture without a person's permission.
Feel free!  And thank you for offering.  Stephen
absolutely adorable photo - what a treasure - and over 100 years old!
What a great picture, they look so happy to be together having fun

Got busy yesterday, but got to it today.  Full-sized picture here.

Let me know what you think, I didn't want to over-do it.  Now that I tried it out, I'm not so sure of the effect:

Very well done!  You've managed to sharpen in and remove the yellowing.  I'm impressed.  And thank you.  Stephen
It looks great.
I'm happy that you appreciate it, it is a precious photo.

This the a photo of my great grand parents, Ora Claude Davis and Purl Brinegar,  on their wedding day. Taken March 4, 1902 in Salem, Richardson County, Nebraska. I was blessed to have Grandma in my life until I was 17. She was absolutely wonderful and I loved her dearly.

I already posted on here a photo of my great grandparents, Ora and Purl Davis, on their wedding day, I also wanted to post this one of Purl Brinegar Davis, dressed up for her portrait. This is how I remember her. This was probably taken in the 1960s in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  I can still see her going outside to pick okra or lettuce, etc, for our dinner.  I miss her so much.

This is a photo of a costume party in Valencia, in 1936.

My grandmother, Margarita Hernández Díez was born in León, but had to move to Valencia with her uncle's family. She made her own costume, with a a black dress and some cotton balls. She used to tell me that at this time, she missed so much her hometown, that she decided to dress up as snow (winter is much colder in León than in Valencia, it never snows in Valencia).

She doesn't look very happy. I guess she missed her parents and siblings too.

This was a really cool party, I bet. Everyone looks like they were having a great time.

This is my grandmother, Gladys Symons (on the right) and two friends. . The friends' names are pencilled on the back as V Allen and B Hooper, as is the date: December 1933. I think it's either a school show or the village pantomime. My grandmother would have been thirteen at the time and she lived in the small China Clay village of Roche, Cornwall, England.

by Sally Douglas G2G6 Mach 3 (37.4k points)
Very special. You can almost see them dancing.
I really like their outfits, but especially their headdresses. Thank you for sharing this wonderful photo -- it's very special.
What a wonderful picture. I love their costumes.

My great-grandfather was a Hospital Apprentice stationed at the US Naval Base Hospital in Leith, Scotland during WWI.  He made sure to get a picture dressed up in the local style.

This photo of two little boys all dressed up is of my maternal Grandfather and his younger brother, Lee, taken in about 1890.

These two boys were probably rarely dressed up as they were growing up on a cattle ranch. Neither one of them look too happy on this occasion. My grandfather never was one to dress up even as an adult -- he continued to be a cattle rancher and civil engineer until retirement. But his brother became a lawyer and later a district attorney and mayor, so maybe dressing up wasn't so bad for him.

by Robin Shaules G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)
Wow!  What a neat old picture.  The details are amazing.  Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Caryl!
Thank You Robin for sharing the photo of those boys they look really cute
