Western Australian Convicts, James Richard Day

+4 votes

Hi everybody,

I have a first cousin, thrice removed,  Caroline Augustia Day, which I have not long added into Wikitree. She married as her second husband, Thomas Day, after shooting her first husband, James Buckman. I had not found a lot on this lady from my side of the tree, it was like she hardly existed and now I know why.

A descendant of Thomas Day's second marriage contacted me this week, asking for my help and through email exchange appraised me of the fact that Caroline shot her first husband and married Thomas as his first wife. She then informed me that Thomas Day born about 1883, according to his and Caroline's marriage certificate was the son of James Richard Day, convict to Western Australia and he and Caroline had two daughters..where I had, so far found one daughter, Dorothy Day. I just wanted to throw this out there to check how much work has been planned for Western Australian Convicts, if any, before I add Thomas Day to Caroline Augustia's profile. I will probably be doing a little digging and adding it to Thomas to begin with. It's been an interesting and exciting week...find out, in one foul swoop, that one is related to a murderer and a convict's granddaughter.

I have been researching and am confident this is the man in question.

I have sent another email to check with my co-relative and am awaiting a reply.

Hi David,

I work on WA Convicts. I hope to see them all on wikitree one day. I haven't done many, I must say. Do you know what convict ship he arrived on?

Hi Kylie,

Yes, I have received a reply from James Richard Day's descendant. She confirmed that he arrived on the William Hammond in 1856, convict number 3750.

This is his son Thomas's profile. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Day-12308

James Day travelled to New South Wales and somewhere along the way met Thomas's mother, Elizabeth Kershaw. Therefore, Thomas's birth is still a mystery. I believe that James married again after that.
