Proposal for a new Template: Mid Level [closed]

+18 votes

The Top Level template is used to denote that the category should not have any profiles attached to it as it is too broad for profile usage. As an example, we would not a profile listed under "Military", "Society", "Cemeteries" or "Sports" as these categories do not provide any useful information or groupings on how and why the profile is categorized.

Help:Categorization (How to Categorize a Profile) states that we should "Always select the narrowest applicable category. That is, choose the most-specific, lowest-level category you can find."

Usage of the Template:Top Level on categories also interacts with DBE Suggestions to reinforce this guideline. When a profile is attached to a category that has the {{Top Level}} template added, these profiles are listed under DBE 885 - Using Top Level category under the Data Doct's Project.

In some cases, the errors notated by DBE 885 - Using Top Level category are incorrect due to the placement of the {{Top Level}} template on categories that are not intended to always be devoid of profiles. While these types of issues could be generally marked as false errors, the root cause of the issue is not corrected and will result in additional errors each time a profile is attached to such as category.

This proposal is to add a new Template:Mid Level for categories, where {{Mid Level}} would display:

This is a mid-level category. Profiles should be added to the narrowest category possible, but may be placed here when further information is not known. See How to Categorize.

As an example on usage, the category for the United States Marine Corps is intended to be a Mid Level category, where Members should strive to place profiles in "the narrowest applicable category"; however, this is not always possible due to the availability of records and/or information currently known - so when lesser details are known, profiles may be placed in this category.

In this case, Category:United States Marine Corps should have the proposed {{Mid Level}} template added, which encourages users to subcategorize to a narrower category when it is possible - but will not exclude profiles from being attached when further subcategorization is currently not possible.

I support this template and its use. Users have been frustrated with the top level causing additions to their suggestion lists, so this can help.

I think this would be a good solution to the problem.

This sounds like a good idea. How is it planned to highlight these categories in the Category Picker so that people adding categories from there know to look for a lower level one if possible?

This would not interact with the Category picker at this time. The only option at present are either to make it available in the tool, or not make it available. Unfortunately, we cannot add any notes that would drive the user in the direction of reading the category page.
