In the Thomas Lane(1634-1709)family of Surry County, VA, there is confusion regarding two John Lanes. They both lived in Eastern North Carolina for a time.
John Lane (1698-1776), son of Joseph Lane and Julian Jarrell, came with the Lane family to Eastern North Carolina before 1720. (He is actually a witness for a Chowan deed in 1717). He married a woman by the name of Mary, lived in this area all of his life and made a will in Halifax in 1774, probated in 1776. (I have more than 10 documents, including a 1769 Bertie Tax List for him.)His will ia available, but has been placed with the profile of John Lane, his nephew!!!
The second John Lane, son of Joseph Lane and Parience McKinnie, a nephew to the earlier John, was b.about 1726, stayed in Eastern North Carolina until about 1760. Then he moved to Craven County, SC, probably settled in Pee Dee River area of Marion County and died there. He did not leave a will. But I have two land documents, one relating to 1770, where his property is adjoining William Hull along the Pee Dee River and the other in 1785 when Mrs Lain's property was adjoining John Grier,NE side of Pee Dee River.
As the life of the second John Lane is somewhat unclear, I do have Y-chromosome DNA evidence for his possible son Osborn Lane (1757-1840) who lived in the Pee Dee River area. The DNA of descendants of Osborn match the DNA of the descendants of Joseph Lane and Patience McKinnie.
In my mind this is very clear, but I am bucking a tree created by Boodie, Southside Va Families, vol 2, p. 295 where he has merged these two John Lanes together. I have very strong documented evidence that there were 2 men, uncle and nephew living in the same area for a while.
Let me know your thoughts,
