I am hopeful that one or both of these files might have some good data in terms of who's named and dates to see if either or both is a match:

  1. North Carolina, Wills and Probate Records, 1665-1998: Briton Barnes, Death: North Carolina, USA Ancestry Record 9061 #1917617.
  2. North Carolina, Wills and Probate Records, 1665-1998: Briton Barnes, Death: Abt 1818 North Carolina, USA Ancestry Record 9061 #827605.

Note that at least two Britton/Brittains were alive around the same time.

MUCH obliged.

The first one is an index and does list

Barnes, Briton - - - - - 191.

The second one contains a will for the above. Did you need a transcription? Or an abstract?

If an abstract sufficiently defines and clarifies relationships, that is probably all that would be needed. At present, little is documented about the family.

Thanks for looking up the record.

Okey, dokey. He left bequests to:

  • Son - Benjamin Barnes
  • Daughter - Elizabeth, wife of Edward Pitman
  • Son - Milza Barnes
  • Son - Britton Barnes
  • Daughter - Lucy Pitman, wife of Jesse Pitman
  • Son - Burwell Barnes
  • Son - John Barnes

The will was signed 14 February 1878. So it would seem that his wife had already passed away.

When I had an Ancestry account, I used wills quite a bit to document family relations. Both North and South Carolina have excellent sources to original will documents and transcribed will documents. I am curious if anyone has found a way outside of a pay service to access these documents.

It is also interesting to point out that the date of the will and the date of the probate are different than the date of death. Often wills we’re done on a death bed but in many cases wills were done years before death which led to some interesting data when the executor died before probate started.  You have to open the document and look at it because the titles are often the same for the will and the probate.  If you see an index, note the page and scroll to that page for the document. Sometimes it’s not there but often it is buried deep in the document.
