Hi Frank!

Thank you very much for your trouble, however the 2 don't pair up. We have all the details to my grandfather's life, born in 1881 in Sunderland, Durham from Stephenson Bell. The strange first names come from the well-known English politician of that time and I've found quite a number of these elsewhere in other families. Thanks again though! All the best. Lionel

Hi Lionel,

Searches show quite a bit of information about William Ewart Gladstone Bell. He was a Professor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium, and his two divorces were very publicly reported in the newspapers - a search of Trove, will give you that information.

Mary divorced him in Aug 1928, decree granted May 1929. One newspaper article suggests they were married on "September 10, 1904, at Wishaw, Scotland, according to the rites of the Established Church of Scotland".

I found a Scotland Census, 1881, for a Mary PW Scott in Dalziel, Lanarkshire, age 2, estimated birthyear 1879, born Lanarkshire - you can find this in FamilySearch, but it doesn't provide other family members (you would probably need a subscription to get the rest of the household).

"Scotland Census, 1881," database, FamilySearch( : 10 December 2017), Mary P W Scott, Dalziel, Lanarkshire, Scotland; from "1881 England, Scotland & Wales census," database, findmypast ( : 2012); citing p. 22, PRO T 1, The National Archives, Kew, Surrey; FHL microfilm 203,627.

I also found a death record for Mary in 1950 in the online NSW BDM,

You would need to request the certificate (and pay) to obtain further details, but it does provide her father's name, John.

Registration Number 12735/1950

Father's Given Name(s) JOHN

Hope this helps you make some progress

I also found a 1904 marriage record in ScotlandsPeople,, so it sounds like the news article was correct about that - but you need to pay to see the image (Ref 628/ 146, RD Name Cambusnethan)

There is a burial record on FindAGrave,, for Mary P Bell, Death: 16 May 1950, which may be her - you may find more information about the record, by contacting the cemetery directly, but there is currently no image of gravestone though I have requested one).

Hi Christine,

Fantastic the work you've gone to, thank you very very much! And you are quite right - it is indeed my grandmother to include the death in Ryde, NSW. This really has taken me a lot further, especially the father's name and where they were living. Now I've found that, I can probably pick up more contacts in the area. And I've also signed in on the various websites you gave me, for example "Scotlandspeople", which I didn't know existed.

Thanks again and all the best!
