Edwin, first would you please take a deep breath, have some chocolate, count to ten, and/or whatever else will restore you to a state of calmness? Maybe it will help to know that I promise that help is on the way and when you get past that first hump (which is probably more semantics than anything else) you'll start to enjoy working on WikiTree and being part of the big, wonderful, and friendly community here.
Let's start with the email problem. You have a profile here (that's the word we use for the page that is dedicated to each person who has been entered in the WikiTree database). Some profiles are those of WikiTree members, so yours is one of this group. A member's profile includes an extra item of data that is usually not on a non-member's profile - that is, the member's email address. You use that address (along with the password you selected) to log into your account here. WikiTree uses that address to send you several different types of messages:
- every Wednesday, you'll get a Family News message
- anyone - another member or just someone who happens to find a profile that you manage - can send you what is called a private message, by entering it on WikiTree. WikiTree sends that to you without revealing your email address to the person who wrote to you.
- When you ask, answer, or comment on questions in G2G (that's the name of this forum - it stands for "genealogist to genealogist"), WikiTree will automatically send you notice anytime someone else answers or comments on the same question.
You can choose to not receive any type of email messages if you wish (it's in your settings and I can explain how to get to that if you need it).
The next thing I'm going to explain is trusted lists. Every profile has either none, one, or more profile managers. It also has a trusted list, which can include members who are not managers, but have access to see and do more things with the profile than members not on that list can. You are automatically the manager of your own profile, as well as of all profiles you add. If you add a lot (a really big lot) of profiles and find that you don't want to remain managing some, you can remove yourself. When a profile has no manager, we say it has been orphaned and we encourage any member with an interest in it to adopt the profile, meaning to become the manager of it.
Since you are manager of your own profile, there is no reason for you to request being added to its trusted list - you're already there. There is also no reason why you would want to send yourself a private message through WikiTree - it would be the equivalent of you writing an email message and sending it to yourself or writing a letter, putting it in an envelope, putting your own address on it and sending it through the post office.
Please let me know if you have any question about the meaning of profiles, members, profile managers, trusted lists, and private messages before I try to address the rest of your questions. I hope this is helpful to you - if not, please let me know how I can do better.
