Hi,

Trying to determine the origin of the Blackston(e)/Blacksten family who appear in Morgan County, OH in the 1830s.

Henry Blackston (1818-?) m Margaret Jane Appleman

James H Blacksten (1820-1892) m Mary S Shell

George H Blacksten (1823-1880) m Mary Jane Laughlin

Martha Blackstone (1824-1878) m Samuel Pettit

Mary Ann Blackston (1825 - ?) m David Vannatta

Nancy P Blackston (1827-1860) m Johnathan Pettit

I believe the above to be siblings - their marriages all occur within a similar timeframe and I have DNA matches to most of them with what's available in the databases I use. Henry is my direct.

Most trees I find place them in the family of William Blackstone and Betsy Bundick with ZERO sources and I do NOT think this is credible or correct. There could be a family connection, but I do not believe these individuals to be their parents.

Some of these siblings list VA as a birth place and others MD. I'm starting to wonder if perhaps their father died and their mother had remarried, thus not finding them on the earlier censuses where the household individuals were grouped into the age ranges rather than enumerated.

Any ideas/assistance would be helpful. I've spoken with many family researchers who agree this is their brick wall with the Blackston/Blacksten line. Thanks!

surnamedb.com does not have the Blacksten surname but it does have Blackston which they have as the 30,307 most popularity rank of close to 50,000 surnames. The name may have originated from Blaxton, a township in West Riding of Yorkshire or Blackstone edge in Lancashire.

Blackstone surname popularity ranking is 3,838th and it has the same two towns for it's origin as Blackston. These two surnames go back as early as the year 1273 in England.
That's great, and I have all the information listed below but it doesn't really answer my question. Thank you!

Sometimes the parents are included in marriage records, but there were no parents names in the marriage records this time.

You may want to go up to Help at the top right of this page and open the help menu. You will find Mentors. Click on that and read over the areas of concentration by each description. Contact the mentor that you think would be the best resource for your question.
