Had a really long Grrrrrrrrrr moment today. Lasted several hours in fact.

Looking to find primary sources for Admiral Nelson's other daughters I identified a book of his letters as a possibility. It's a book, not on the internet. Popped into the local library today and was told it is not held by the County. "So?" I've used the inter-library service for years. "It's very expensive". "Really?" I could always afford it. "Used to be £1 then it went up to £4, now it's £40, or perhaps it's £20." Not willing to pay that much I stomped out. Whatever happened to the 1948 commitment to affordable life-long learning? "Anyway this library has hardly any books in it now." Poor girl, it isn't her fault. However much I love Wikitree I'll never pay that to see a couple of lines in a letter or two. I was really upset and muttered for hours. Himself was very kind. When we got home he found a second hand copy available for £6.50p including postage. That is just plain barmy.

I've got another Grrrrr moment for you.  My City-County Library dropped their subscription to Inter-Library Loan because it was too expensive and required 2 people to maintain!!!

It was never a well known service the library provided but they never made any attempt to advertise it.

That's husband, I take it?
I expect so.  I just copied the name from the original poster.
Yes Indeed. Let us hope Himself was rewarded with favourite food and beverage.

I don't know where you're based C, but if you're in the UK and within easy reach of London, the British Library seems to have really eased up on their requirements for a reader's ticket recently (see https://www.bl.uk/help/how-to-get-a-reader-pass ).

The last time I applied (a very long time ago), you had to prove the book wasn't available through inter-library loan.

That's welcome info, though we are both getting a bit fragile. Perhaps a weekend in town some time, with a long list. (Didn't really mean weekend!)

You can also get day pass to the Senate House Library plus the Institute of Historical Research library.

( As an aside,  and slightly tongue in cheek. Another very  enjoyable route is to do an OU post grad degree.Access to a world of online research papers and even Find My Past. I also have a card which gives access to most University Libraries. But the tuition fee would cover a lot of interlibrary loans and book purchases...and I've bought rather a lot)

Just love books. Think I've more History books than the library, but I really like cheap books so I can read them in the bath. Our library is not a library any more, it's a Discovery Centre and Community Hub. Lots of folk playing cards on computers as far as I can see. Edited to add "and a cafe". They had to get rid of a lot of books to find room for that.

That is incredibly frustrating when those situations happen.

By the way, I get a kick out of the phrase "that is just plain barmy." I have no idea what that means and it doesn't matter, but I'm adding it to my personal lexicon. I have kids, so I have no doubt I'll be able to roll that one out by the end of the day. laugh

I can empathize. I found a microfilm available via interlibrary loan...only to find later that they would only loan to a library with a secure, supervised reading room.

I live in Wales and I can access a lot of online resources through the National Library of Wales via my local library service.

Sheesh, me too.  I live in upstate New York near Lake Erie.  Cannot use my local library card to take stuff out of the Buffalo Public LIbrary (which is really good, has many resources for New England and MD genealogy) unless paying $40/yr and then have to drive the 75 miles to return them - can't take them back to local libraries.  Interlibrary loan costs $2 per book now.  Grrrrrr!

Our library system here won't do interlibrary loans on books designated as genealogy references at all.8(
