Our goal for the Connect-a-Thon is to decrease the number of profiles that are not connected to our big tree by spending 72 hours adding new profiles to already existing ones. So the focus will be on adding family members to existing profiles. One point will be awarded for each sourced profile that is added as a relative of an existing profile. New profiles must have at least one valid source and please don't forget to first search if there's no profile already pesent at WikiTree for this person that perhaps just needs to be connected.... (so also try to prevent duplicates)

There are a few different ways to choose profiles to add to or connect:
Er zijn verschillende manieren om nog toe te voegen of te verbinden profielen te kiezen:

  • Work from your Watchlist:
One of the easiest ways to participate is to work on building out your own family lines. Sometimes we focus so much on our direct lines that we forget about the collateral ones. You can work on building outward, not just upward or downward.
  • Work on your Unconnected Profiles:
If you click on the "Find" menu in the top right of the WikiTree screen and select "Unconnected People", you will see a list of the people on your watchlist who are not yet connected to the main tree. You can sort that list several ways, and also limit it to a particular surname. If you click on the highlighted word "total" in the first paragraph on that page, you will see a list of all unconnected profiles on WikiTree, which works the same way.
  • The DBE Unconnected page
The DBE Unconnected page lists reports for different countries in the world, showing unconnected branches with at least one profile which says that the person in the profile was born or died in that country.
  • The DBE Unconnected pagina
  • Needs Profiles Created Category
This category exists as a way of noting profiles that have sources for family members who do not yet have profiles on WikiTree. For example, a member might have only created a profile for a daughter mentioned in a census. However, the rest of the family still needs to be added to WikiTree.
  • Needs Profiles Created Categorie

I have been going through a number of profiles on my watchlist looking for those where I added names of relatives in the bio text (with sources) but did not create profiles for them yet, and I'm adding the "needs=Profiles Created" line in the Dutch Roots project or sticker templates.  The initial research for these uncreated profiles has been done enough to provide exact birth information and a relationship to an existing profile.

I also have a number of parenteels created by others that have long lists of related people  but no sources.  These are all text files or PDFs.  These will provide great hints for creating new profiles that are related to existing profiles during the connect-a-thon.  It's fortunate that Dutch records are so easy to find and that there are so many of them.
by Erik Oosterwal G2G6 Mach 5 (53.6k points)

Sounds great Erik, perhaps there are more members who manage or know profiles where they have been working on and with sources and information added to them for other familymembers that still need profiles ?

As Erik mentioned as well, but perhaps not everyone knows, for needs now everyone can also add needs=Profiles Created with the project box or sticker or with just the category [[Category:Dutch Roots Project Needs Profiles Created]] and this way we all can find them in that category wink

It looks like the Connect-a-Thon is a bit like the Liberation day challenge eeh, adding profiles and that way trying to connect the still unconnected ones to our main WikiTree.

Thanks for your enthusiasm and help Erik it sure is a great idea to prepare things a bit already for the Connect-a-Thon !

Bea, I didn't know this was a new needs category. Since when? It sounds like something that could be useful, because sometimes you are just creating one profile to go back in time to parents and grandparents, where you know that those profiles have much more kids listed in for example Wiewaswie. I only know two needs categories (needs=Birth and needs=More Records). Are there more?

@Margreet

These are all Dutch Roots "needs" categories

All 19th century Amsterdam profiles needing birth?

Find them fast

Thanks Jan
Margreet you are right it's a pretty new one, Erik created it for us during the Liberation day challenge and it's a needs category that at first was 'invented' and used for the Integrators challenges, so with the Connect-a-Thon coming up it looked like a very handy one. We often are working on profiles or families during challenge where we find and sometimes add sources for children to the parents without creating or adding profiles for them all, and often after the challenge is over we move on to another one or something else, now moving on is no problem and with this categorie/needs added to them we can find and work on adding profiles for children (or other familymembers) later more easy and (save them up for) during the Connect-a-Thon or the monthly integrators challenge if members like to work on this. :)

Bevolkingsregisters often have groups of names that belong to the same family and will sometimes include birthdates, date of death, links to spouses, etc.  Marriage records also have large lists of connected people, especially the ones I'm finding from Groningen; not only do they list the grrom, bride, and their parents, but they list everyone on the "Bruids zijde" and "Bruidegoms zijde" along with how they are related to the bride and groom, like this.  I wish all the marriage records had these lists.

When I'm working on a profile where I don't really want to continue to be the manager and I find a record that lists many more family members I will mention them on the profile and put "needs=Profiles Created" in the Dutch Roots project or sticker template.  This way I don't have to remember all of them.  If I can't get back to that profile and create the new profiles myself, then at least the next person who discovers the profile will already have a list of family members and maybe it will save them some investigation time.

What have people been doing to get ready for the connect-a-thon? That is other than Erik who has been busily adding needs=Profiles Created.

I decided where to focus my attention (unconnected orphans born in The Netherlands and died in Iowa) and then looked at those profiles and the ones connected to them to make sure they were all well sourced so that I have as many leads as possible and won't need to waste connect-a-thon time improving those profiles. (Some of the clusters needed a lot of work!)
by W Robertson G2G6 Pilot (119k points)

Wonderful Wendy!

I took a peek at the long list of the Automated: DD Unconnected list NLDcheeky And will work from there.

Many profiles are not Dutch, some have relations with The Netherlands, but there are profiles in between that are not in the right list. I think we should give that a second look after the "Thon".

Well whatever you do, where ever you work I hope you find THE connection! :)

Good luck dear W.!

We are so happy to have - drums! - 20!!!!!! WT-ers joined our team. Thank you soooooooo much!!

GO FDT (Flying Dutch(wo)men Team)!!

Every new profile made/created does count, if it has at least one reliable source of course.

So let us go for it!!!!

We will be proud if we end up again in the top 10!

But more important is to be a team; improving our Tree, having great fun, getting knowing eachother better, how to find reliable sources, knowing more about the Dutch Name Conventions, learning about the Dutch Templates and Category System (I learned some new this week!).

We re all colleagues aiming for the same. Some longer here than others. Not brighter or smarter, just longer here.

So just feel at home. Do not hesitate to ask questions (even if you think it is stupid, we do not think questions are ever).

Only a few hours before starting.

Again thank you for joining us and (orange) GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

I have to work all day tomorrow (last busy day before the summerbreak at schools, but the moment I have my hands free I WILL JOIN!! laugh

Again thank you for joining us.

Astrid and Bea.

Well I am up and moving despite a major problem with my browser. :-(

Don't expect too many connections from me as it takes a while to complete the sources, categories and stickers.

All the best to everyone and have fun!
by Melissa McKay G2G6 Mach 3 (38.2k points)
hmmm 4 hours ===> 7 profiles

well least they are all well sourced :-)
Every profile is one and jup to have them sourced and look good right away sometimes just takes a lot of time eeh. You can try the needs profiles created ones, if it's correct they already have sources added to them for profiles (baptisms of  children etc.) that still are missing, so it's a great place to be or work from during the connect-a-thon . ;)
The only problem with this a-thon, is quantity is more valuable then quality. Tis easy and quick to go for quantity, proper sourcing is the opposite.

I am trying to do decent sourcing, but am not doing much with biographies. I think my tactic of unconnected orphans with a US Netherlands connection is paying off. By searching on a midwestern state I am getting mostly 19th century, so a lot of records in the Netherlands and lots of US census records. Plus since they are orphans, the families have often not been fleshed out much. If anyone else wants to move to a set like this, I suggest Wisconsin or Michigan which both have large numbers of immigrants. (New York and New Jersey could work but being older states you can get into time periods that are harder to do quickly.). And with the orphans you can correct the LNAB which are so often wrong on immigrants.

Hi W.

Congratulations on all your connections.

You seem to have a pretty good handle on Netherlands - US connections.  Perhaps you might consider helping us with the Netherlands - USA portal? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Portal_World-The_Netherlands-USA

Any information you can add would be much appreciated.

Melissa - Coordinator
I think I have added what I know to the Portal. The rest is from correcting data problems and sourcing abandoned orphans.

My other "trick" for connecting was sticking to the earlier immigrants when a small group of families was inter marrying. I found it was a lot harder for people that immigrated decades later.

I do not see the Connect-A-Thon in the challenge tracker...... what am I missing?
by Astrid Spaargaren G2G6 Pilot (284k points)
Ah I see at the tracker that it counts automatically. Thank you Ales! :D

I've had enough for this first day: three unconnected branches (Smit-860 for 26, Lolkus-11 for 21 and Meulie-3 for 15) gone.

I hope I can find more tomorrow :)
by B. W. J. Molier G2G6 Mach 9 (91.0k points)
I noticed that sometime since last week when I looked at my unsourced group and this evening, you connected a family. Thanks! I set that family aside and moved on to a family where I recognize some last names of people who married in so am hoping to find another connection.

Woo hoo! Just connected them to the big tree!
Great! I suspect you will find more of those...

Today: Bosma-192 and Van Kuilenburg-11 for 18 unconnecteds, Luderus-1 for 19 and some Draaisma's
I am still working on the same extended family, which is now connected 4 times to the main tree.
I connected a few. Struggling with the van den Wildenberg family. But we will get there!
Astrid, are you working on that unsourced set of orphans  that moved to Wisconsin (from a very old gedcom)? Oh dear and good luck! There are a lot of profiles for people with a connection to Little Chute, Wisconsin, so hopefully some of them are connected to the big tree

Yes Wendy......... pffff! laugh But I lost them............Forgot their names. surprise

Ah found them back! Family Bootz/Sanders.

Yeah! The lost is found

Hi girls!

Nice save :) I made connections for some smaller branches:

  • Salemink-19 for 18
  • Van Wijngaarden-54 for 18
  • Wouda-59 for 11
  • Huizinga-52 for 14
  • Onstenk-3 for 17
  • Moedt-8 for 17
Hope to see some results in the numbers next week. Tomorrow will be a working day for me, so good luck with your connecting!

B.W.J. you re a star! Nice rank!! Nr.174!!! I think you re 3rd at our team!! Congrats.

W. is 2nd! Rank nr.152! Even more congrats!

And guess what! Sally is still number 1!! Rank nr.140! Wow Sally that is fantastic.

Way to go Sally! I was profiled out very early today, so I am done (unless I get a surprise bit of energy before bed). I have one family that will be connected after a merge.

Trying to catch up a bit here (night time is the best time for me..no visitors or kids running around cheeky) and waauw you all are doing really great.. 815 that's really fantastic...and the best thing is... still a couple of hours left ..

Well, that was it for the connect-a-thon for me.

Did reach my goal of connecting Fanny Blankers-Koen, who to my surprise didn't have a profile, to the global tree. smiley

And guess who turns out to be related to our flying Dutch(wo)man? None other than our own co-captain Astrid (Astrid and Fanny are fifth cousins once removed).

by Joke van Veenendaal G2G6 Mach 9 (95.0k points)

Soo cool Joke and thanks for all the great work you did, it's always so awesome to see how we all are related eeh.

Sleep well and still busy for a while, no matter what challenge we have at WT, it's like everyone picks exactly the challenge weekends to come visit us and keep me away from the laptop cheeky

Oh my Joke!!! That is cool! Always thought I was maybe family of Sjoukje Dijkstra but this just great! Thank you for sharing!

I m just reading all now as I had to work today and was not able to add anything..... sad

The Nor"Easters would like to offer congratulations on weathering the Connect-A-Thon. It was a big success adding many profiles to the tree and we had lots of fun. We also now have a huge spotify playlist to listen too while working on WikiTree. We were glad to have your team onboard in the effort.

by Steven Tibbetts G2G6 Pilot (410k points)
Thank you so much Steven!

Congratulations back to the Nor"Easters! Together we did a great job at "our" Tree!

I had a blast - mostly worked on my Spaanderman clan, but spent a little time on one of Elsa's "needs Profiles Created", and wound up learning a new way to dig through the myriad of pre-1811 Church records - I discovered the "alle religies" index that some provinces have.  A bit tedious to dig through for big cities, but it beats looking through 8 or 10 different databases when you don't know what church they went to.
by Charlie Panek G2G6 Mach 2 (27.6k points)
Thank you so much Charlie for all you did.

And wonderful you learned some new! Looking forward already to the next Challenge to work with you!
