CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Welcome to another summer Weekend Chat, my fellow WikiChatterers!

Greetings from beautiful Cathey’s Creek! The Touristas are starting to arrive, and the traffic is beginning to increase in our area. We have some resort communities not far away, but most visitors are coming to see our part of the Pisgah National Forest, great for hiking, fishing, camping, or just nature loving. I plan on stopping by the very small Reid Pioneer Cemetery out in the woods up in the mountains, requiring a short hike, and I’d better prepare to protect myself from the ticks! Ugh! As a boy growing up in rural North Carolina, I remember my parents having to pick them out of my hair. Ah, the country life.

Our local red-tailed hawk has learned that if it hangs out long enough in the trees above our bird feeders it’ll find a meal. In the past two weeks, two chipmunks have been snagged for breakfast. Sad, because we love watching their antics as they zoom in among the squirrels to find seed beneath the feeders. Early morning also brings out our deer, groundhogs, and rabbits. (As long as the rabbits stay away from our Asiatic lilies, their cute. Otherwise, I’m calling for the hawk!)

On the Homefront 1: After 24 days of no rain, we are finally getting some this weekend, and boy do we need it. Of course, the soil is so fertile and climate so amenable to growth, that when the front finally passes through in a couple of days, the grass will be a foot high, mocking me as it grows. I used to like mowing, but then we planted several dozens of trees and that really slows things down.

On the Homefront 2: Remember the root canal I got about a month ago? Well, the pain returned (but no infection) and I returned to the doc to check it out. He had originally found a small crack in the tooth, but thought it could be saved. However, the crack has widened and the tooth will need to be extracted. Oh, joy! The good news is that I’m going to get a refund! Woohoo!

On the genealogy front: I’ve been working on Needs Profiles Created (the rain helps!). I found a family that had extensive connections in one area, and I discovered that, far back, part of the family was descended from an ancestor of mine. More impetus to get this family on WikiTree!

To all our fellow WikiTreers here in the US in the path of the tornados, rain, and flooding: we all hope you are safe. I used to watch the Weather Channel for local weather, but now all it does is make me worry about you.

Finally, as yesterday was the 75th anniversary of D-Day at Normandy, France, we take the time to remember and honor all those men and women who served during World War II, particularly at that action. Of the 16,000,000 men and women who served from the US, only a half a million remain. As a son of a vet of the Pacific Theater, I am saddened by this, a generation passing. If only I had asked my dad more questions before Alzheimer’s took him from us.

I hope all of you have a fruitful and enjoyable weekend. I can’t wait to hear what everyone has been up to. Now, hop in and enjoy the Chat!

Thanks for hosting, Pip and sorry about the need for an extraction. No fun.
Thank you Pip for hosting and sharing your week with us. You are "everywhere" and very much appreciated by the WikiTree Community!!  Cheering you on to do more!!
Great write-up as usual Pip. I so agree about the ticks, going out back here I check constantly for those little buggers, one time one was attached to my temple!!! What a week it's been, right?!
Sorry about the root canal, bud. I hope you feel better soon. =D
Hope the tooth feels better, thanks (as always) for hosting.

And thanks for the comment to my profile; nice surprise this morning!
Hi Cousin Pip! Yikes, I'm so sorry about your tooth. But I'm glad you're going to get a refund--some dentists (mine) wouldn't do that.
Thanks for hosting Pip, I always enjoy your write-ups.

And thanks for the comment on my profile, it was a lovely surprise.

A refund from the dentist ??? I didn't know they did that !!
He might recoup the cost of the extraction by selling the name of the refunding dentist for $?? per person.  Does he take new patients?

Thanks Pip for Hosting this WikiTree Weekend Chat.

I know how that about the root canal I had a tooth I had a root canal done in when I was in high school my junior year. About 5 years ago it cracked from top to the bottom so they had to pull it. It felt better when they pulled it in about 3 days.

In Hawaii in 2004 I stood on the boat and the place where  they signed the paper they signed on D-Day. I toured the boat with my parents. It was called USS Arizona. I think but it might be the other boat that was close to it in Hawaii.

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Beulah, that would be a long drive for you! But, you'd have to make sure that it was something worth the refund, like a failed procedure! surprise

Pip, I'm not planning to have failed procedures and refunds the reason for choosing such a dentist.   It is his attitude and concerned caring attitude he seems to have for his patients that speaks so well for him in his practice.  You have a gem.   I am happy with mine here at home.
Ain’t that the truth! Best referral I’ve ever gotten. You better believe I’m sticking with him. One thing I liked best was his complete explanation of what he was going to do and talking about it as we went along.

Today is...

NATIONAL DOUGHNUT (DONUT) DAY

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day.  This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army.  It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe.  Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers.  American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”  A more standard spelling is donut.

Salvation Army truck sitting in front of Bearscat Bakehouse in Bismarck, ND.

On this day, many bakeries and coffee shops in the United States offer doughnut deals to their customers.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Celebrate the day by enjoying your favorite doughnut.  Use #NationalDonutDay or #NationalDoughnutDay when using social media.

HISTORY

National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I.  This day began as a fund-raiser for Chicago’s Salvation Army.  The goal of their 1938 fund-raiser was to help the needy during the Great Depression.

Darn, what a day to choose virtue!
If anyone isn't aware we have a page about it on it on WikiTree https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:National_Doughnut_Day

:)
I love doughnuts !! The Wikitree page on National Doughnut Day is fabulous.

Ditto to what everyone said here on this chat .

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

My husband discovered this yesterday when he stopped for cold drinks to take to his work crew. I asked if he shared the donuts with the crew and he replied "No, I got four old fashions, because that is what I like. Miiine." LOL
What a special celebration, I learned something new today. Thank you for sharing Dorothy
I can get down with this day! :-) Thanks Dorothy!

My paternal grandma worked in a donut shop in New Haven, Indiana, so we always got a freebie. One day, I decided to be the hero of my cousins (on the maternal side) and take them all for a free donut. Grandma gave me a look when I entered the shop with about 6 other kids. She gave us all a donut on-the-house, but I found out years later that she was not happy that I just brought them all in promising a freebie. She paid for them out of her pocket. OOPS.

Nothing like a freshly fried hot donut.
Many people had recollections of "THAT LOOK" in last
weeks G2G.
Hah, Beulah, we've all received it and given it, I think!
There is nothing like a good doughnut...Can't wait to get back home and get a real one.

Hi Pip, hope you and all other members are having a good week, and ready for the weekend.

Yes, the Greatest Generation is on our minds today.

We have had great weather here in Central Pennsylvania. i always enjoy seeing folks outside doing their chores and others just relaxing.

Still working on updating profiles and and researching horizontal lines. Have been in contact with some other members seeing what needs more work or  more research to make more connections with some of the profiles they started.

Hope everyone has a safe weekend, and hope everyone takes time to smell the roses.

Those are beautiful pictures of your part of the planet Pip. They look like fall pictures with all the leaves on the rocks. I wonder what it looks like in the Summer? As far as genealogy goes I'm pretty much stuck on my fourth great grandfather so far. Those furrin lands like Germany really stump me. Because I'm unsure if my gggg grandfather was German or Swedish, I'm stuck.

Around the house I'm learning how to sew clothing. Flat things I can sew confidently, but when you have to actually have curves and the bane of my existence armholes, I get lost. I say cut off all the curves and arms and make the world an easier place to clothe. What say you?

Last year I dug up about three hundred irises and separated them to sell bulbs this year. I was gonna be rich. Turns out I kept the part you were supposed to throw away and threw away the part you were supposed to keep. *sigh*

As for D-Day, I don't know of any relatives who took part but I am very thankful for those that did. USA USA USA.

Sewing was a tradition in my family. My aunt Bernice learned to sew working as a corset fitter with her half sister in the 1930s. She went on to own a dress shop, and make most of the wedding dresses in Norword, Colorado. Curves are tricky - stretch, pull, pin. My aunt did show me how to sew in a sleeve -- gather side down with lots (I mean lots) of pins -- which is not good for the sewing machine needle.

How lovely, it sure takes an eye; my wife is a regular artist when it comes to sewing.  I'll post a pic or two when I get home of some of her creations.

Betty, while I do have a few brickwalls here in the States, most of mine end at the Atlantic coast! Yup, going back to Europe can be difficult!!

SJ please do post some pictures of your wife's work.

Here is a quilt I made for my Navy son.

And this is a t-shirt quilt I made for money. It's all Beatle's t-shirts.

Too fun

Hello Wikipeeps,

Friends and neighbors it's been a long time since I last answered a weekend chat. So today I am sitting outside my place with my feet up with the laptop and enjoying the 71F (22c) weather. There is a cool breeze going and the sun is shining brightly. It feels so invigorating. So I slowly getting back into the swing of things it's going to be baby steps but each day I believe I keep getting better. For now I will at-least endeavor to show my face in the G2G.

Thanks Pip for hosting and thanks for all you do.

Hails and horns, Wikipeeps!

There is a lot going on this week as I got the book "Blood Washes Blood" from Pip. Very cool and very awesome. I'm a couple chapters in and it's pretty good. For those who don't know it's an account of this guy, Frank Viviano's trek to figure out stuff about his family in Sicily.

And speaking of Sicily, I'm working with a few people to create an Italian Roots video for Wikitree. It seems several projects on the site have project related videos and I thought "I think we need one." So, I talked to the bossman about it and got a few people involved. Should be good. Not sure when we'll get it done. But, we have a script.

People asked if I had video experience. I laughed. I do have experience/ Over 50 comic reviews worth.

Some music was suggested and all I can think of is "Ya know...glad this video isn't gonna have an ad. The copyright bots would be taking it down so fast."

We hope to be shooting some parts of the vid soon. Should be fun.

In the mean time, you can check out this exciting blog I wrote this week about namesakes: https://allroadhaverhill.blogspot.com/2019/06/52-ancestors-week-23-namesake.html

Check it out and enjoy!

by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (764k points)
Chris, I don’t have (as far as I know) a single Italian root, but I can’t wait to see the video.
Next thing you know you have a cousin Al. Al Fredo. =)

I look forward to making it. Right now it just depends on schedules and stuff.

Greetings From Brightlingsea, Essex, England

Having an afternoon catching up on some loose ends on Wikitree. Have this week been looking into my Kirkbride connections - through my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Kirkbride, and its been very interesting.

Thought I would add the photo I took yesterday of the flags flying at the War Memorial in Victoria Place, Brightlingsea for 75th Anniversat of D -Day.

Beautiful pic, Chris. Were you able to attend any of the ceremonies? I saw a few in TV.
Watched on TV with my Dad, who is 93. He was in the navy but not involved in D-Day itself.

Good Morning Pip and All!!

I have spent a good amount of time on WikiTree the past two or three weeks as my surgical wounds healed. Now, I have no good excuse to continue sitting in my chair with feet propped and laptop in my lap!! Both surgeons released me back to my dermatologist for three month checkups on the melanoma but no problems expected.

I have continued to add the families of the 2 son in laws and have been able to expand their lines. We had all three grandsons here for a couple of days so I printed out what I had that was on WikiTree and sent them home with their ancestors in tow. Hoping to set my hooks into their curious minds!

We watched a lot of the DDay ceremonies. It brought to mind someone I knew in my first librarian job out of college. She became a very good friend and entertained me for two years with stories of marching across Europe following the troops after DDay. She was a nurse and traveled along treating the wounded and dying. Her husband entered France on DDay and she did not know for about three weeks if he was still alive.I wish I had written down her stories but I do remember a few. She died in 2008 just short of her 90th birthday. Thankfully, I had been able to visit with her several times in the previous few years.

Enjoy the weekend where you all are. I hope and pray the folks in all the flooded areas are safe. That is such a tragedy that impacts so many people.
by Virginia Fields G2G Astronaut (1.2m points)

Ginny, if you ever find the time amongst all that you do, do write those stories down. You might be the only one who will pass those down, even if only on a profile on WikiTree.

As for losing your excuse to sit around, if you’re like me you’ll be scheming for another one! laughlaugh

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

Hello from southeastern Virginia

Pip - your area sounds pretty, and is a spot I'd like to visit sometime. Thanks for hosting

Weather - hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. (Note to self - save this description which is good through September)

The garden - there are a couple of thumb sized zucchini and yellow squash, one lone green bean ready to pick, one lone green pepper, and a few tomatoes that are starting to get that look like they are ready to turn color.

Genealogy - went to the local Family History Library to look at images this week, and pretty much concluded that my ancestors were married and had children in that 1788-1799 timeframe where town and church records are missing or very scarce for the area where they lived in Connecticut. Of course then they moved to upstate New York where there really aren't records prior to 1880. Oh well. Otherwise, I am continuing to add to the family tree - horizontally. Occasionally get distracted by the FamilySearchFamilyTree - I did find a distant cousin but get so discouraged by the lack of sources, incorrect names and dates, and duplicates in that tree.
by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (597k points)

It is a bummer when records can't be found; I've been in emails all week with a county official in somewhere Tennessee and their courthouse burned in the 1840's and my ancestor's records (will) were in the early 1840's.  She just emailed me last night that no records could be found sad

Frustrating, I know. You seem to handle it the same way I do, Kay... working horizontally when the vertical just won’t pan out.
SJ, I have the same trouble with Tennessee: lack of records, and I have several lines that end right there in the first half of the 19th century.
Yes, no records is a real bummer. I heard from the town historian where my ancestors moved about 1806, staying until about 1886. The town does not have any records prior to 1880. Ugh.

Weather update -- since my earlier post, we have had about 2" of rain. It's still pretty humid and raining, but not as hard.

Ditto to what everyone said here on this chat.

Been a busy WT week - as always wink

Bio builder's monthly theme, "Married in June," has brought me to transform these profiles:

1. Robert Pyle Robinson (1869 - 1939) - Delaware Governor - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Robinson-13462, & his wife:
2. Margaret Hollingsworth (Fouraker) Robinson (1878 - 1962) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fouraker-8
3. Leroy Newton Baty (abt. 1892 - aft. 1953) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Baty-263
4. Lola Ruth (Hitchler) Baty (1899 - 1989) - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hitchler-2

Top two are a Delaware Governor and his wife (I coordinate for the Delaware Project). The other two are my own great-grandparents.  It is nice to get some of my own ancestors with a decent looking (and sourced) profile!

Weather in Spain is sunny (as it always is).  This week 30 degrees C (86 F).

I'm covering for NJ on the WikiTree points recognition effort for the Integrators Project so a lot of "Congrats on 100,000 G2G points" posts from me.  Almost caught up on the backlog, only two more to go.

A 2nd cousin has found a letter written by my great-aunt to my great-grandmother, sometime around 1930.  The letter is written from Santa Monica, California telling about the conditions there to a relative in Minnesota who is considering moving to CA.  The letter is very descriptive giving the cost of rent, cost to buy a house, cost of groceries, all sorts of interesting tid bits.  I'm working to get copies of it and I will create a space page for it.

Hope everyone is having a good start to their weekend!

Thanks for catching up on all those Pilots! You’re doing great!
Well done on the Pilot posts SJ, thank you for that.

This week we have mostly good news! First I went to the doctor on Monday and he said I lost some weight and my blood pressure is good without medication.laugh My knee is improving but very slowly so he said I should look into a knee brace. My son in law, form North Carolina, got the all clear from his doctor to return to work after a 50 day medical leave.laugh We made arrangements with one grandson to cut the grass so that I don't have to do that while my knee is sore.wink My doctor suggested that I use my walking machine for 5 minutes a day, working up to 20 minutes. The problem is I have to work up to 5 minutes first.cheeky The last medical thing this week, I hope, is that Monday I am having a home medical evaluation, Think house call but they also check out the home to see if I need any other assistance. More on that next week. On the genealogy front I have added a couple of Notable profiles to the tree, the latest is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shay-585 a Railroad pioneer.

There was an item on the local news this morning about using genealogy and DNA to identify the remains of an infant found dead in 1993. They have the mother in custody and she admitted that she had the baby and then just left him out in the woods.crying

by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Thanks for making such a great profile for a notable Michigander!
Thomas, the profile still could use a lot of work, as well as connected to the big tree, but for now I have changed course and am working on some unsourced profiles I adopted. I will get back to that profile sometime in the future.
As much as you don’t want to, Dale, do take it easy working back up to speed.

How’s the “new” camera working out?
As for the camera I haven't even loaded the film yet, soon I hope. I know to not rush with healing or genealogy but I agree sometimes you do want to speed the process up. Someone else in the house is trying to push things but I push back.

Good for you Dale. Ditto to everyone on this chat.

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

Get well soon Dale
Great work on the weight and blood pressure. Keep up the positivity and efforts
S Mercer, I have a long way to go yet on the weight, but the first few pounds are a good start. also losing weight and exercise help with not only Blood Pressure and blood sugar levels. who knows I might be able to start back with eating doughnuts in the future.
Too late for a free one this year but a super goal for next year.
Write the "free day" on your calendar so you don't forget it when you are allowed.  Or ask Dorothy for a personal reminder.  She is so organized and shares with everyone so generously.

Happy Friday everyone!!!

It has been a long time since I popped in on a weekend chat.  I have recently joined some new projects here at Wiki Tree so you will see me around a lot more.

Here in Pennsylvania summer is taking its time showing up.  I could not be happier.  The heat and humidity do not play nice with my fibromyalgia.  Some days are unbearable!  Any other fibro warriors here at Wiki Tree?  Fibro stinks but being here makes my days bearable as Wiki Tree takes my mind off of the pain for a little while.  Some days it hurts to type so I don't do much of it.

One think I want to say about Wiki Tree...I want to encourage everyone to keep up the great work you are doing here at Wiki Tree.  We all appreciate it!  I have recently gotten comments about people not feeling welcome when they are just starting out here and they are afraid to make mistakes so they do not contribute.  All are welcome at all levels...we were all beginners once.  Thank you!

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend :)
by Shannon Thomas G2G6 Mach 2 (21.3k points)
Which projects, Shannon?
Shannon, I don’t have fibromyalgia, but my mother does, and I know how it affects her! My heart goes out to you! She had a spate of it recently and almost cancelled a trip to New Orleans over it. We got her some meds to help (some) and she was able to go.
Hi Thomas

I am a WikiTree Ranger and I am now on the appreciation team.  I have also started working on connector project.  Lots of fun here at WikiTree!

Pip I am so happy she was able to go!  I know I hate to cancel but when it is bad unfortunately I have to cancel.  It can be so frustrating for the sufferers and the families as well.  Gentle hugs to you and your mother smiley

Thank you, Shannon. And gentle hugs to you and yours, too!

Happy weekend everyone!  Warm and sunny today but expecting more storms on Sunday.  As for my flower garden, my iris are done for the year but the smaller lilies are beginning to bloom as well as my English Lavender.  Smells wonderful!

I have a great-uncle who was in the D-Day invasion along with his cousin.  I created profiles for both, Hollandsworth-109 and Hollandsworth-110, and will flesh them out this weekend. Uncle Paul was a hoot and I miss his stories of the family.
by Michelle Enke G2G6 Pilot (421k points)
Michelle, I’ve been looking for some lavender we could plant here. Just so beautiful. Out irises will be blooming soon. Our Asiatic lilies are already in full bloom. Just beautiful!
Pip, I used to have several different types of lavender.  I let a couple plants stay wet for too long and they did not make it.  They like well-drained soil.  When I water the garden, or it rains, the plants provide a wonderful aroma.

Greetings, WikiKin!

Another week, another big bag o' rabbits!  This week's hunt flushed out the grandfather of a G2G subject, who it turns out had about twenty children with three wives.  Final tally pending.  I got some warnings about siblings born over forty years apart!  surprise

Today is day #2 of four consecutive gorgeous ones, and they predict it will be Albuquerque's first 90 degree (32C) day of 2019.  About time!

This week the humble rock dove, in hono(u)r of its prettier cousins in the tree outside my office.

Pigeon by Jo Nakashima

Cheers,

Herb

by Living Tardy G2G6 Pilot (765k points)
Great pigeon.

We haven't gotten to 90 yet and expect temps to be in the mid 80s today/tomorrow but only in the mid 60s (17C) on Sunday.
Thanks, Doug!  It will be about 10 (5) degrees cooler at home, with a similar forecast for cooling on Sunday.  It might even rain again Sunday night, which is unusual for this time of year here.
So, Herbert, you’re finally going to dry out? About time! Whatcha got planned for the summer, aside from tax maintenance, I mean?

No particular plans, Pip.  Where I live, every time I go home is like a vacation.  smiley

Living the dream... I like that.  Really nice rock dove, the fold lines are really crisp,  I can really appreciate that now.

Thanks, cousin!  There is a definite less-is-more thing when it comes to nice crisp lines.  More detail means more folds, and folds of more layers.  The pigeon looks crisp because almost all the folds are only two, and some four, layers of paper.  It's part of Nakashima's genius that he can show us a pigeon without building it from the DNA up.  Same with the penguin and the butterfly (Evi Binzinger), which explains their appeal I think.  There's my western mind using too many words.  Some day I will learn to say all that in seventeen syllables.  wink

The said that this has been wettest month since keeping record in Tennessee.

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

It has been a great week but quite busy. I hope everyone has had a good week as ell.

The weather is settling into Summer pattern of warm and sunny with thunderstorms in the afternoon. Some produce a springkling of rain but most just rumble and generate lots of lightning.

The garden is recovering and starting to look good. The last of this years required expansion beds are finished but I plan to add two more just to be ready for next Spring. We do have another irrigation leak but haven't localized it yet. Mowing is being put off for a while due to breaking the drive belt on the lawn tractor. It's old enough that no one stocks the part locally.

Genealogically, haven't done much this past week. Really need to do something there. I mostly did my WT tasks. I'm just about done one rewrite of a profile for a Canadian notable. Have to track down a couple more sources before it is complete.
by Doug McCallum G2G6 Pilot (531k points)
Mower belts... I have to order mine online. Really glad your garden is recovering, but I know that is due to your hard work. It really took a hit with the late snow.

Greetings WikiKin!

It is a beautiful, warm, sunny day here in the Great Lakes State, where, if you look at it on a map, you can clearly see the hand of God upon the face of the Earth. wink I'm fervently hoping for a string of hot days to raise the water temperature in the lakes soon.

On the homefront: There has been much grilling, and last night we ate outside on the patio. Last Monday, my five-yearol twin boys had another T-Ball game, and they have one again tonight.

On Wednesday, I went to pick up a secondhand bunk bedstead set my wife had bought for the twins from someone via Facebook Marketplace. Tomorrow, I get to move furniture around and set the beds up in their room. For now, they will be used as separate twin beds, they will be bunked when the kids are older. It's somewhat bittersweet to move the twins out of their toddler beds, since I built them. As someone who isn't especially handy, that was perhaps my crowning achievement in that arena.

My final news item from the homefront is that my wife and I are expecting to add a fourth immediate descendant to our family tree. This will likely occur in mid-to late November.

On the wikifront: I continue to source {{Unsourced|Michigan}} profiles. They have finally dropped below 200, and are sitting at 185 right now.

The Fuller Name Study celebrates the first anniversary of its founding tomorrow. Borrowing an idea from Greg Slade, I have launched an informal sub-project for the group to create profiles for deceased persons on the Fuller surname page at Wikipedia.

While sourcing a Michigander earlier today I came across a giant mess of the most conflated and wrongly-mixed profiles I've ever seen at WikiTree. I'm sure there's been plenty worse.... but my goodness. Wish me luck.

Wow! Congratulations, to you and your wife another t-ball player? I my wife and I had married younger, we’d have had more than the two we had. I’m glad for you!

Conflated profiles: where angels fear to tread! I wish you the best!

Thank you Pip, for hosting and for all of your effort here.

On the garden front: I lost my organic gardening halo this week because the mosquitoes finally drove me to spray. I'm doing it at sunset as to not hurt the bees, and that'll have to do. I saw about 3000 mosquitoes boiling up out of my bushes at once and thought, "yeah, that's it. I can't bear this." I'm one of those people they love to chew on, and I was starting to hate the garden because of them. As a result I was able to weed and tie up tomatoes today, and SIX kinds of tomatoes have little green tomatoes on them. I've been eating loads of lettuce and peas. I've felt tiny new potatoes under the soil's surface. The chard is starting to look like a serious crop. Asian lilies look gorgeous. So yay for the garden.

In genealogy, I plug away at my own ancestors' siblings, and I've entered 40 men into my Civil War Project (all the As and Bs here. That's only 40 out of about 1500! I'm learning as I go--the history, the terminology, the sources, and how to search for more on them. I found a little known fact (according to a fellow wikitreer) that Wm. Faulkner's grandfather, who was a Colonel in the war, was in the Alton Prison. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, he managed to escape in the transfer. It's one little letter in the 3800-page unindexed file, so I'm not surprised few have stumbled across it.

I yard-sat for my sister for two weeks and as a result tomorrow get taken out for the best fried chicken in town. Looking forward to that. Found a new novelist I like with eight books out, so have been happily binge-reading those.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Ahhh, WC is a fellow binge reader. I do that with authors I like. Hard to find series that I can get into.

1500?!? I’m struggling with only one company of a little over 200!
Books and binge reading. We both have that problem. Do you know about FantasticFiction.com (aka FantasticFiction.co.uk)? Tracks fiction writers, gives some reviews but most important lists all books by series and order within series. At the bottom are lists of authors who might be similar and authors that the "author" likes. Important info when out book shopping. Haven't found a non-fiction site.

Not only are we book addicts, my wife has cataloged them all. Avoids buying the 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, etc.) copy of a book.
I didn't know that site, Doug. Thanks for the head's up. I think I found this author by scanning through my library's "new books." The new book was on hold, but it sounded interesting, so I went back and found the old books. Sometimes I do a search there for "historical mysteries" (a genre I enjoy a good deal) and find something good as well.
Pip, I'm definitely not going to get through the 1500 in two weeks--or even two months! And for now, I'm connecting very few to the larger tree. A project for another decade. : )

Hi everyone!

Checking in early today, hearing the thunder out there. The weather was quite hot this week, often around 30°C (...runs to SJ to convert into F, I only remember 77F is 25C - around 86F it was this week), but the last few days we had some thunderstoerms cooling the air down a bit. There was even a little tornado in the far west of Germany, I read in the news.

On the homefront, mum listened to advice and got a second opinion on her broken arm. Result is I brought her this morning into hospital and she had surgery this afternoon. When I called about 1 hour ago, she was still in the anesthetic recovery room, so I don't even know what kind of surgery they eventually made. There were two options and the surgeon said: "I will have to open the arm to see if we can make the easy one ("only" a metal plate to connect again the bone with the shoulder) or the bigger one (prosthesis of the shoulder)." The only good thing in all that stuff is that the surgeon is the team doctor of the German track and field team in national competitions (like European/World Championships and Olympics). My thought was: "In Athletics you need feet and hips and hands and knees and shoulders, and if he was someone who knows nothing, he wouldn't be their team doc." So yes, I think she is in good hands at him.

Translation wise I came a bit forward again and hope to use the time alone now to translate a bit more.

Genealogy wise I killed some people who were born too early to be still alive and I sourced some Canadians again.

Sounds like your mom is in good hands, Jelena. Keep us posted!
Jelena, sounds good with your mother.

If you want a good, simple way to get approximate C / F conversion:

C->F          add 15 to the value in C then double it.

F->C          take half the F value and subtract 15.

It starts to get off at higher and lower temps but is usually close enough (don't use for converting baking temps).

Best wishes for your mother's recovery.

Today is also:

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE ICE CREAM DAY

To observe National Chocolate Ice Cream Day on June 7 all you need is chocolate ice cream.  Who says you have to stop there, though? You can have it in a cone or make it from scratch.  Add sprinkles or syrup or whipped cream.

Chocolate ice cream is the second most common flavor, surpassed only by vanilla.  The chocolate flavored ice cream has been in existence well over a hundred years and has been popular in the United States since the late 19th century.

Cocoa powder is blended in with eggs, cream, vanilla and sugar to make chocolate ice cream.  The cocoa powder is what gives the ice cream a brown color.  Other flavors, such as rocky road or triple chocolate chunk, use chocolate ice cream in their creation.

HOW TO OBSERVE

,,,,So if you don't want a dougnut today have some chocolate ice cream instead!!!

Try this chocolate ice cream recipe and a chocolate milkshake recipe.

OK, much better than donuts!!!!!!!!!
Lies, Doug. Both are equally awesome.
There are some good donuts. A really good cake with a glaze or some yeasted ones are OK but I'm probably a heretic -- I really don't care for Krispycreme.
Would you settle for donuts with chocolate ice cream on top?
Sure, chocolate ice cream makes most things better :-)

Did someone say Ice Cream cheeky

Ahh, donuts for breakfast and ice cream for dessert!
LOL donuts and chocolate ice cream!
I did it again, observed the day with the proper food.  Chocolate ice cream yeahhhh !!

Dorothy ditto to what everyone said on this chat. I love ice cream especially chocolate and kind of ice cream that has chocolate in it. I also love any kind of donuts also.

I welcome every one to the WikiTree Weekend Chat.

You are making it difficult this weekend, first doughnut's now chocolate ice cream.

@Dean: It’s Dorothy’s subtle way of sabotaging our diets! laugh
