Hi team.
Janet has suggested that we add a post here, just to let everyone know what we've decided to work on for the Connect-a-Thon.
I've chosen to work on any unconnected England branches that have more than 200 profiles. And over the challenge weekend, I'm hoping to get four of them completed, which should add about 800 profiles to the England connected tally.
I'll obviously have to do a fair amount of prep work for this, (which I've already started on), but for me that's all part of the fun of connecting.
If there are any team members that want to join me on this venture, and concentrate on the big branches, then do please get it touch.
Also, I'd be happy to try and work out a possible connection route beforehand for any branches that contain over 100 profiles, and which are predominantly English. (Any counties except London/Middlesex or Lancashire, both of which I really struggle with).
If anyone would like to nominate a branch for me to look at, then just post here on our chat page.
I've a few unconnected on my watchlist, but have decided to leave those for another day. It's often more interesting to work on areas outside of familiar territory.

That's a lot of profiles Carol, I guess with nearly a month to go it is possible. Would be fantastic. I added an abbreviated version of your comment next to your name.
How do you search and find branches with 200 profiles attached?

Hi Dave,

This link takes you to the big unconnected branches:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DBE_Unconnected_UK#England

if you click on the words 'show more unconnected trees' then the table will expand. The number under 'tree size' is the total of profiles in that branch. If you click on the capital T next to any of the trees it lists all the profiles in the branch. I then normally do 'ctrl F' and search for the word 'england'. Some of the big trees only have a few England profiles, but I like to work on those that have lots.

If you would like to work on a particular county Needs profile added category the table on our page when you click the county takes you to that counties Needs profile list.
Great question Dave

Janet, thank you for the tip on the app.    I am new to WikiTree (last September) and in five steps I got 92 to work on.  In ten steps 1832.  So I have enough from myself to work on without working from a list.  Also need to find the time to take the pre-1700 test moving forward. smiley

Check it our if you haven't.  You may find that you will not need a list either because you need to work on your own ancestors.

Since posting my thoughts, I've decided that working out a connection and then leaving it do later was somewhat counter-productive, so as I've been working out the big connections I've been completing them as well. I've managed to clear 7 of the over '200's', which connected 2,294 profiles, and a further 689 profiles have been connected from smaller trees. For the Connect-a-Thon I'm going to create profiles for my new ONS – the Winton family of Sussex.

My 4 X great grandfather, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Lear-420 has been a brick wall of mine for over 15 years, so I'm going to look at unconnected profiles that are unrelated to me from Bitton, Gloucestershire in the hope that it gives me a few clues about my 4 X gt grandfathers family. I'm also going to look at unconnected families on my watch list.

I saw I got added to the list by registering.  Thanks
Thanks Lexene added you to the participant table. I added what you said in your registration post next to your name. Let me know if you wish to work on anything

Thanks for joining us for this challenge

Janet
I added you David. Any ideas were or what you might work on?
I was gong to start with branches of my family that need to be connected.  I've gotten so focused on sorcerer's that I have neglected that.  I started pre-work last night. I haven't done pre-work except for Photo-A-Thon.  I didn't do any pre-work on Source-A-Thon.

The other thing I have work on is my perfectionist self and remember the object is to add profiles and not add extra sources and make perfect profiles.

Sorry  to here you are saying stay away from Lancashire. And it is hard work. I could use some help there (Liverpool area).
Are we going to use Discord again?  I enjoyed that.  So much better than trying to chat on WikiTree.  Also liked being able to see who was onboard.  Hopefully more people will join this time.
Hi David

Yes Discord will be in use and new members of the Team like Lexene will be invited to join that. Not sure you realise but you are posting on Lexene  answer not your own....

Lexene, I will send you an invite to our more active chat Discord, once I figure out how to, Gillian normally does them, sure I will figure it out eventually.
I’ve been enjoying all the comments David. Being new it’s all interesting and I’ll be asking lots of questions
Will probably work on adding siblings to my Branches, and double checking some of my sources, not sure I’ve added them as comprehensively as they could be
Lexene,

As I read the help file, I see that the object is to add parents to someone in the tree so that you can eventually get to where the next set of parents is in the tree and you need to connect that person to their parents.  Thus the term 'Unconnected'.

Janet, am I correct in my understanding?

Hi David

Yes you are correct, they want to connect profiles so eventually they link to other branches in the tree all the way back to the common ancestors from which we all are connected.

If you click your watch list it will show you profiles in your tree then click unconnect this will give you a list of your profiles that are unconnected.

There is also a new app to help find profiles that probably are the missing links https://apps.wikitree.com/apps/nelson3486/connections/  this should help provide clues to build the connect profiles or simply make a connection by adding them to current profiles

Clear as mud.... have a practice with it, the app is new so we are all learning how it works.

I will possibly add another table to the county unconnect lists as companion to the "needs profiles added" table

This Thon was originally going to be called create a thon but in the end they went with connect a thon, it is one and the same by adding profiles we expand the tree and make new connections

All the best Janet

PS Gillian is still touring England, she will be back in Australia on the first.

Thank you Janet.  Tried the. See my comment.
Are there bonus points for connecting once you have enough profiles added?
Hi David

Sorry no bonuses, unless you win a Tee Shirt by joining in the live chats.

You get a point for each new profile added. Note the first one must already be on the tree.

Yes I have several Unconnected profiles in my tree mainly ones I adopted in the last month also have ones where I am on the Trusted list. You should see my prep list its 8 pages long already...

Hello to the Sandringham Strollers.  I would love to join your team in general. 95% of my tree on both sides is from Staffordshire/Warwickshire.  I live in Canada but I’m a first generation Canadian. I also lived and went to school as a teenager in England in the good old “Black Country” and I’m very familiar with their slang and the area in general.

I’m still working on adding a lot of my tree, but I’m happy to help

I was just about to load a bunch of photos... then I thought of the Scan-a-Thon...

Have a fantastic day!

Hi there - decided to work on some unconnected profiles from the list. Chose Suffolk today, and made a start by adding a profile for the husband and leaving research notes so that I don't have to reapeat looking up the Census Returns someone used as sources. Will add the children during the challenge  :-)

The Nor"Easters would like to offer congratulations on weathering the Connect-A-Thon. It was a big success adding many profiles to the tree and we had lots of fun. We also now have a huge spotify playlist to listen too while working on WikiTree. We were glad to have your team onboard in the effort.
