Hi Juanita!

There is a Burke One Name Study if you are interested.

You could also add nova_scotia to your tags to get a more targeted response.

Good luck!

Burke is a widespread name in Nova Scotia.  You will need to get more specific if you want to find someone related to your father.  Try this for clues.  https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/

As of Census 1921 the only Burke Family closely associated with Port Hood, NS is that of one Whitfield Burke residing at Dunmore. (N.B. There are other Burke families elsewhere in Inverness Co.). As enumerated, the family of Whitfield Burke consists of:

  • Whitfield, age 45
  • Maggie, age 40
  • Willard, age 21
  • Hughena, age 19
  • Joseph, age 18
  • Nellie, age 16
  • Laura, age 13
  • Hilda, age 10
  • James, age 8
  • Mabel, age 6
  • Shirley, age 1

Recorded in the marriage registers of Guysborough, Co. of 1898, dated 2 November of that year, is the marriage of Whitfield Burke, age 23, occupation fishing, born and residing at Drum Head, son of George and Mary; the bride is given as Maggie E. Reynolds, age 17, born and residing at Port Hood, Cape Breton, daughter of Isaac and Ellen.

Based on this information Whitfield is almost certainly the Owen W. Burke born 4 April 1876 at Seal Harbour, Guysborough Co. to George Burke and Mary Davidson (whose marriage date is given as 1 February 1864 at Isaac's Harbour)

There is a headstone found in Port Hood Union Protestant Cemetery for Whitfield Burke (1875-1947) and Margaret Ellen (Reynolds) Burke (1882-1939).

It seems quite possible that your "Merrill" Burke could be the son Marcel Burke identified in the Will of Whitfield Burke (other descendants mentioned: a) grandson Calvin and b) daughter Nellie who is appointed executrix).

Whitfield Burke of Port Hood also appears in a number of Canadian government lists of fox farmers (as do many of the family remaining in Guysborough Co.).

From a cursory search the details of the *parents of* Whitfield Burke are: George Burke (1840-1919) son of John Burke and Agnes Ann Purcell and Mary Jane Davidson (1841-1907) daughter of James Davidson and Isabella MacMillan.

Almost all the birth registrations for the children enumerated in the 1921 census of Whitfield Burke that are available are delayed registrations so there is a chance that (if he is in fact a son of Whitfield) your father's birth was not registered. The birth of Whitfield Burke's daughter Nellie for example was not registered until 1970 (by someone named Alex MacPhee of Port Hood) citing a Burke family bible as the source of the date. IF that bible still exists it may be the best source to answer the question of whether your Merrill is likely a son of Whitfield or not (at least until the 1931 Census is released a few years from now), however who would be in possession of it (again, if it exists) is difficult to guess - we can suppose Nellie herself was in possession of it until her death (in 2000 assuming that she is the Nellie Alice Burke buried at Port Hood). It appears she was never married (the delayed birth registration lists her as "Miss") and that she had a son Wayne Calvin Burke (1931-1983) that predeceased her and shares her headstone, who may be the grandson Calvin given as an heir in Whitfield's will.

After making some inquiries, folks who knew Whitfield Burke's daughter Nellie (who passed away in 2000) recall that "she often spoke" about a brother Merle.

This Merle does not appear in the available census records suggesting a birth later than 1921.

Obviously this does not confirm this is the right Burke family, but it definitely fits with the information you have provided.

If you recall any of your uncle's and aunt's names you can compare them to the other known children of Whitfield and wife Margaret Ellen Reynolds:

  1. Willard (AKA Brien W.)
  2. Hughena (AKA Euena May, married Hodgson)
  3. Joseph (possibly AKA George Whitfield)
  4. Nellie (middle name Alice)
  5. Laura (middle name Jane, married Morrison)
  6. Hilda (possibly middle name Maude, possibly married Jenkins)
  7. James (middle name Francis)
  8. Mabel (middle name Irene)
  9. Shirley

These have similarities to my family history

If you’re a child of Merrill (Merle) Burke I am your first cousin,  his sister Laura was my mother and they were children of Whitfield Burke and Margaret Reynolds.  I think Merle was the youngest in the family it I’m not sure.  I heard that he had an accident to his legs as a boy when he fell out of a hayloft.  More recently a sister of mine who met him in Ontario said he had Parkinson’s.
