Greetings, fellow Wikitree-ers,
I am currently adding the family to Wikitree, and Henri Kostrovitzki (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kostrovitzki-2) is the great-great-grandfather of several of my cousins, so I am tracing him on their behalf. He and his younger brother, Constantine (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kostrovitzki-7), were apparently abandoned by their parents in London in the late 1870s. In 1877 they were admitted to Brighton Road School, a kind of orphanage; records from when the boys were christened there (Henri was 14) suggest that they recalled that their mother's name was "July" and their father's name was "Louis". In subsequent censuses Henri reported being born in France or Poland, while Constantine was born in London. I therefore added (tentative) profiles for their parents with these names.
However, later family stories suggest that Henri claimed that their father's name was "Apollinaire" and that he was in the army (French?). I initially assumed that this might have been invented by Henri later on, perhaps after he became aware of the French author's family name (would that even have been common knowledge?).
But, I then found Constantine's 1872 birth record from Islington, London (GRO index, not the Familysearch one), shows that his mother's surname was "FLORIAM", so I started wondering if this family story could be true, and she was in fact Julia Floriani, the reported wife of Apolinary/Apollinaire Kostrowicki, the parents of Angelica/Angelika Kostrowicka, the mother of the famous author Apollinaire (one of whose many names was her father's). Is it possible that Julia could have been physically present in London in 1872? Or are these a completely different set of people, and it is I who is confabulating?
There are a couple of scantily-sourced trees on the internet that do seem to confirm these details, but of course before I put anything up here I should find reliable sources.
I would be grateful if anyone here has a good source on the ancestry of Apollinaire - I believe there is a relatively recent book on him by Laurence Campa, but I don't have a copy (or read French well!).
Thanks for your help!
