Identity Crisis - professional advice requested.

What was a fun Sourcing adventure has led me back to G2G.

Originally Michael Leddy was b. 1849 in Vermont & d. 1916 in Vermont.

At some point Michael’s data was changed - he is now b. 1780 in Ireland and d. 1865 in Vermont. The “new” data agrees with the gravestone inscription from the FindAGrave memorial that was added at the time of the birth & death changes.

I am not sure if there are other contributing factors, but we have these suggestions associated with Michael:

1) 210 - Father was dead before birth - because: Michael Leddy died in 1865, ~13 years before the birth of his daughter Rose Anna (Leddy) Dorey in 1878. Her dob is substantiated by census, marriage and death references.

Note: Rose Anna’s marriage & death references both list her father as Michael Leddy b. in Shelburne, Vermont. (Mother is Mary Gill, b. In Vermont on both documents.)

2) 205 - Father is too young or not born - because: Michael Leddy was born in 1780, ~36 years before his father, Peter B. Leddy, was born in 1816.

3) 305 - Mother too young or not born - because: Michael Leddy was born in 1780, ~38 years before his mother, Margaret (Sheridan) Leddy, was born in 1818.

This is beyond my knowledge level, so here I am again, asking for some Data Doctor expertise. Please forgive any typos or misconceptions ... this has worn me out!

Copy/paste from my iPad is quirky ... sorry.
Interesting to me because I just had a profile that I left a question about as a research note that involved records from Chittenden, Connecticut also.  I found that all four children had corrected birth records and the two sons had their names changed from Cohen to (Cohen) Towle but the two daughters who were married remained Cohen plus new name.  Was there an incompetent official somewhere?
I did not try to follow up on why the name change.
[[Cohen-345|Hyman Cohen]]
I have been looking at this issue and thinking about it ... going around & around and have finally reached the conclusion that fixing this problem is not something that I am confident about doing. So, to prevent a bigger mess, I hope some kind soul will take this data and run with it. Going back to simpler tasks ...

Problem solved!

  • restored original data for Leddy-8
  • created new profile for conflated individual: Leddy-178

Sounds like 2 different fellows with the same name - possibly grandfather and grandson judging by those dates....

Just my opinion.

Not the answer but found a son’s marriage

They also appear as Leady in some records

Originally it was THIS Michael Leddy.

I would switch it back and then see about the other Michael Leddy.

It is really dangerous when someone finds one piece of data and changes everything to match it. I look much closer before major changes. Could Michael Leddy have had a father named Michael Leddy? or a grandfather?????
http://abair.com/genealogy/Leddy/MichaelLeddy.htm#johntleddy Yes, I would say Michael had Peter and both Michael and Peter came over from Ireland. Then Peter had a son which is THIS Michael. Hope this helps. I'd revert this back to the correct Michael and then make a new Michael as the father of Peter with the FAG reference they used to change this Michael.
Additionally, it would be a good idea to adopt the orphaned profile to help prevent this identity change from happening again. I've observed that newish members sometimes mistakenly think that an orphaned profile is an abandoned profile that's available to be recycled to represent some other person with the same name.
Actually if you check the change log, this was changed by a seasoned member.
aargh...
Also in cases of like names (as in the French who gave their children their names and sometimes two or more children their names) down several generations, it can be a good idea to put a discussion note at the top of the profile.  Indicate that there are actual pwo people of this name, different dates, not to be confused or merged, etc.  Whatever the situation is.

Looks like it is two different Michael's. A new profile will need to be created for one of them and the corresponding information moved.
