Why include ref numbers in uploaded GEDCOMs?

+1 vote
I uploaded a small (c400 people) GEDCOM last night and am spending some time cleaning it up this morning. (I really should be doing PAID work right now, but I'm havig too much fun over here.)

I notice that WikiTree did not strip unnecessary fields such as REFID and USERID. Any reason why? It would be nice if it did, so that we wouldn't have to manually edit them out. Thanks.

Hi Jillaine,

Glad you're having fun! You seem like a valuable addition to the community.

The IDs bug me too. I think you're right that we ought to skip them.

When setting up the import system we operated under the principle that we don't want any information that's in the GEDCOM to be lost. Often the system doesn't "know" what information means. So, it's put in the body of the page for the user to sort out. That seems a safer approach than guessing at whether something is relevant. However, we do know what some of these IDs are: they're specific identifiers from the user's installation of a family tree software program, and are not relevant on WikiTree.
