In the 1980s, my grandparents became world travelers. They'd lived frugally their whole life, and now, in their sixties and seventies, they were traveling to New Zealand and Scotland and Germany and Austria.

I think that is so cool. I've never been to any of those places, and I'd like like to think that adventures on the other side of the world are in my future too.

My grandpa made a photo album of their travels. The caption says this one was 1985 in Bad Ems, Germany.

by Jessica Hammond G2G6 Mach 3 (34.5k points)
My grandmother did the same thing in the 80's.  She visited distant relatives in Sweden, went to the Holy Lands, Germany, etc.  The thing was, she was terrible at directions.  I think in Egypt she left a restaurant by a different door than she entered by, and started wandering down a back street looking for the bus.  It wasn't a very friendly place, and the tour guide had to go chasing after her.  Another time she went with a new camera, and held it backwards the whole time, taking shots of her nose and face. But she was unfazed, and would save up for her next trip.
I love that story about your grandmother!

I think it is wonderful that your grandparents became world travelers. You never know how much time you have left and you might as well have a great time doing what (healthy) things you enjoy doing.

Good for them!

This a photo of my sisters, dad and maternal grandmother stopped somewhere on the way to California to visit my uncle. We made the trip in a Volkswagen Beetle and it took us 4 days to get there. Not sure how we all fit!

by Rhonda Zimmerman G2G6 Pilot (228k points)
Rhonda, you have to be kidding me.  All five of you traveled in a Volkswagen Beetle to California?

Somebody must have had some leg cramps, back aches, and your dad looks like he has long legs, so how in the world did he shift gears?

I wish I was a mouse on that trip.

Thank you for sharing.
Gorgeous photo Rhonda of your family, must have been very nice to travel like this. Thank You for sharing this wonderful photo
When I was in 8th grade, a number of my fellow high schoolers and I attended a drama class at the local Jr. College in the next town. We would stay in town after school, and the teacher would pick us up on his way to class in his VW bug. We once had 13 students (from 7th through 12th grades) and the teacher in that car. I shared the space behind the back seat with another of the younger students. It was before seat belt laws. I believe we had 3 in the passenger's front seat, on each other's laps. We only had to go 10 miles, though--and back. Too bad no one got a photo of that!

The postcard my maternal Grandmother, Stella E. Lawson, received in 1956 from her daughter, my mother, Clara A. Pointer after she arrived with her five children and husband, Cpt. Paul E. Pointer Jr., on assignment to Wheeler Army Airfield base on Oahu, Hawaii. We traveled by boat to reach the island. My mother was very seasick but managed to get us looking presentable to meet the delegates from Paul's outfit.  We lived in a cottage on Waialee Beach, long gone.

by Pamela Culy G2G6 Mach 3 (33.4k points)
Pamela, did you like traveling on a boat? I have never been on one other than a pontoon boat.

Was it fun living in Hawaii. A lot of people from the states always dream of visiting Hawaii, but it hasn't been one of my dream vacations - although if I won a trip, I would go willingly.

Thanks for sharing the picture.
Cheryl - I love boats!  I don't suffer from seasickness.

It was wonderful living in Hawaii.  I was only three and four years old at the time, but I remember it well.  My stepfather, Cpt. Pointer, used to come home for lunch in a helicopter.  I thought he was so dashing!  Sadly, Hawaii is no longer a place I would visit since that is where Cpt. Paul Pointer died in a plane crash.  Too many sad memories alongside the sweet.
Pamela, that does sound like an exciting life - coming home for lunch in a helicopter. I am so sorry he was killed in a plane crash. What a terrible way to die. You have my deepest sympathy.

Harry Joseph Sheard (2nd from right), c. 1925, probably in either Guatemala or Cuba.  He was my grandfather, though he died long before I was born.

I believe this is my first time posting to the 52 Photo challenge.

by Charles Sheard G2G2 (2.1k points)
Charles, this is an amazing picture. I love the different style hats everyone is wearing. Everyone but your grandfather is dressed the same. He seems cool, calm and collected.

If this is your first time posting, you picked a great picture to share, and I thank you!
Gorgeous photo I just enjoy looking at the outfit they have on.

Thank You for sharing this wonderful photo
Great picture!  They all look so pleased to be traveling. Thanks for sharing!

An early morning flight to Dunedin, New Zealand, just 1 month ago!!

https://www.wikitree.com/photo.php/2/28/52_Photos_Week_26_Travel-10.jpg

by Robynne Lozier G2G Astronaut (1.3m points)
Robynne, I presume you were on that flight to New Zealand? How lucky are you?

Perfect day to fly is the sky is any indication. Looks like the skies were blue and calm.

Thank you for sharing, and I am jealous.
No I was NOT on this flight. I am not in New Zealand. This was a flight my sister and nephew took in the early morning of 25 May 2019 - 1 month ago - from Auckland to Dunedin (in New Zealand) to attend the funeral of my Uncle Eric who had died. He had celebrated his 100th birthday a few weeks earlier.

I posted this photo for this prompt, because a plane flight is a means of travel.
Robynne this certainly is a travel photo, thank You for sharing

How sad about your uncle Eric died a few weeks after his 100 years birthday.

The photo you share are amazing, it makes me want to goin holiday

The way my Dad traveled to work in 1946.

by Terri Jerkes G2G6 Mach 2 (22.5k points)
Terri, do you have any idea what some guys would give to have your dad's car today? We have Cruise Night on Wednesday in our small town. The guys (and a few girls) show up on main street with their vintage cars, and I am sure a few of them would die for this one.

Thank you for sharing. Excellent picture.

My GG Grandfather on a camping trip, in Illinois or Indiana. He was active in the Spanish American War gatherings and a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars. He went to many of the meetings, so this trip was probably to one of them. He is on the right, his friend that served with him is James Reubin, on the left. James' wife, Kate (Helton) Reubin is in the other picture. My GGF had a shoe and harness shop, so I'm guessing he made the tent to fit the car to make one of the first campers.

by Jon Slaton G2G5 (6.0k points)
Is she getting ready to whack him with a hatchet?  LOL

Cool tent/camper.
Rob, that is too funny.

Jon, how innovative. I wonder if he filed a patent for his invention.

This is really pretty cool. I wonder what he called it?

Thank you for sharing.

I would love to have all these old photos that you all share. My father was in the Army/AirCorp and all the family Bibles and old pictures were lost.

Anywho, my picture today, comes from Vietnam. My oldest daughter's father traveled to Vietnam for one tour in the Army. She also traveled, to Germany, when she was in the Army.

MaryAnn, your picture is perfect. Traveling to Vietnam to fight for our country was very important. I salute our heros who fought in that war, when so many people protested it. There were so many draft dodgers.

Please thank your daughter also, for serving in the military. Our service people do not get enough thanks for what they do for our country.

Thank you for sharing this picture. It is great!

My grandparents were traveling evangelists from 1914-1941. After Papa's graduation from McMaster's Seminary in 1914, they felt a special call to take the gospel to the rural parts of America. This, of course, was even before radio. They would stay in an area for 3-4 weeks, holding meetings each night with children's programs, "youth" programs, and a main meeting for the adults. During the days, Papa taught the local pastors - most of whom had no real education in the Bible. They shipped a large tent and benches to seat 3,000 by rail from place to place, but they drove (shipping was cheap, seats on a train were expensive!). In those days, the drive was often the most perilous part of the entire job for them! They tried to stay south during the coldest parts of winter, but this picture is an early Oregon storm as they head to a meeting in Baker City.

by Cara Shelton G2G3 (3.5k points)

What a marvelous and dedicated profession your grandparents chose. If they filled 3,000 seats as traveling evangelists, he must have been very good, and interesting to listen to.

I listened to traveling evangelists in the 60's and they could pack a house if they were good. Billy Graham could pack an auditorium with standing room only.

You shared a very interesting story with us. They didn't live an easy life. Thank you so much, and God Bless You!

Anneliese, What a wonderful trip that must have been for your husband and you. Especially for your husband to travel to the birthplace of his g-grandfather in Ireland. I think that would have been exciting. To be in the church where he was baptized would have given me chills.

I think that would have been the trip of a lifetime.

Thank you for sharing.

52 Photos Week 26 Travel

500px-McGowan-2218-1.jpg

For travel, I am sharing a very personal picture of mine. My son died on May 17, 2015 in Momence, Illinois. We had his funeral on May 23, 2015. My ex-husband came to Illinois for the funeral and took 1/3 of my son's ashes back to Arizona with him.

On September 27, 2015, the Golden Knights released his ashes over Skydive Arizona. My ex-husband took this picture. My son traveled to many areas that day when he was released.

by Cheryl Hess G2G Astronaut (1.8m points)
Cheryl This photo and your sons ashes spread from the sky make tears to my eyes, what a heart breaking history.

The photo is amazing and say so much, because you can se the ashes flying op the Skye.

Susan, how very kind you are. You really are a special person. You see right into my heart. I cried when I typed this, and I am crying now. This was the hardest thing I have ever been though in my life. I have lost my dad and sister, but this took my breathe away and I haven't gotten it back yet.

Thank you my dear friend, for your comments.
Cheryl, your picture is a little slice of heavenly remembrance. I cannot imagine the devastation I would feel at losing my son!  Its a sign of your strength, you sharing this picture. There are no words I can say to comfort you.  Just remember that he loved you, I'm sure very much.
Dear Cheryl, thank you for sharing this very personal and poignant photo. My sister recently lost her son and I know how difficult that has been for her. You're very special to be able to share this with all of us. Thank you again.

Thank you so much, Pamela for sharing your lovely sentiment with me.  You are very kind. laugh

Robin, you are always so kind to me. I appreciate your comments, and please let your sister know how sorry I am for her loss. I understand exactly how she is feeling and it really doesn't get any easier.

Thank you for your very, very kind sentiments.
Cheryl, I've been working my way through the pictures this week, came to this one and felt so sad for you and your family. My heart goes out to you.
