Best practices for female ancestors?

Multipart question:

1. Is there a tutorial available to teach best practices in naming, dates, etc.?

2 When I see women listed they could be either Sally Ames, who marries Joe Fuller, or Sally (Ames) Fuller.

Is one method recommended? Doesn't the second method make the watch list more difficult to use since daughters get shuffled around?
