Hannah Mathis and Hannah Mathews Snow

I believe that the profile for Hannah Mathis [Mathis-123] should either be deleted or merged into Hannah Mathews Snow [Mathews-1491]. [Mathis-123] is listed as daughter of Daniel Matthews and Eunice Morse Matthews so I'm unsure why it's listed as Mathis.

I was looking for a profile for Hannah Snow, daughter of Hannah Matthews Snow who married her first cousin Elisha Matthews. I will add Hannah to [Mathews-1491].

Should I propose a merger?

Now spelling changes happened all the time, the birth record should determine the spelling of the last name.
Why the birth record when many surnames are misspelled and direct you to other spelling variations? That's why there is an enormous problem with this family's surname. For example, the Thankful Matthews marriage to Peter Joslyn is recorded as Thana Mathis.

Another example, Daniel Sr.'s birth vital record in Marlborough has Mathis (church record Matthews).
Well it depends on when and where - generally it is WT policy - unless that is the only time that name is used ever - In many projects it is the rule - like New Netherland Settlers it is the rule, if you can find the birth record you have the LNAB

Diane,

I looked at the files you questioned above. The first file should be Mathis-23, but I think you just made a typo on that one. When I researched that file, I found a Massachusetts marriage license for her and Jabez Snow. On that record her name is listed as Mathis. But the rest of the records I could find, I see her name spelled as Matthews (with 2 tt's).

I would propose a merge of the two profiles, and I would spell the last name Matthews. My reason for this is the spelling of her brother Joel's name in the Book, "The History of Woodstock, Vermont", 1761-1886, pgs. 72-73, by Henry Swan Dana.

I think you could noting what you believe is the correct and why. In the meantime adding a few sources to the correct one would be good.
