One Name Studies Project: request your 2019 Name Study here! [DO NOT USE THIS] [closed]

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname in 2019?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

Check here: is there one for your name already?

The three requirements are:
1) You have been on WikiTree for 30 days
2) You have signed the Honor Code
3) You have made 100 or more contributions (not just G2G points)

Read more about the project here:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

Please note when requesting redirects to variants: There can only be three spellings of the surname per Study, and one of them must be the name itself (such as Haywood, Heywood, and Haywud for the Haywood Name Study).  This limit is posed due to limitations of the creation form plus lack of manpower.

Remember to hit 'ANSWER', not 'comment', nor 'reply'

Got my ONS in on the first round of this post. Ros, you are doing Yeomen’s work on these studies. 2 thumbs up.
I requested One Name Studies for AVERY and LYON/LYONS and now they don't show up on this page.

Sorry - I found the requests in pg. 3.
Of course not.  I haven't created them yet.  Have patience. :)
'Glasgow' please

I would like to start a one name study on the surname Burman.  Variants are Burnham, Burnam and Boreman.  Many thanks, Carol
by Carol Burman G2G3 (3.3k points)

I have created the Burman Name Study at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Burman_Name_Study

You gave me too many variant spellings, so I was unable to include 'Boreman'.  There is also a Borman Name Study here on WikiTree.

You can reach the companion category page by clicking on the phrase 'Burman Name Study' among the categories at the foot of the page. This is a list of all the profiles you include in your Study.

I am still listed as the profile manager; I do not have your email address to put you on the Trusted List.  So that you avoid spam, do not put it on this forum.  Instead, send me a Trusted List request from your Study; then I will have your address and can complete the creation.

Note to self: Carol needs the ONS badge plus redirects to Burman, Burnham, and Burnam

Thanks for your message.  I have now set you as manager.

I would like to start a one name study group for the name Dunaway. The name is derived from the Irish, Donnchadha, and has several known variants. Genetic testing is beginning to reveal that some of us are part of the O'Donoghue Sept of Munster, others the O'Donoghues of Connacht, and that others have acquired the name as a result of a location or political connection to one of the O'Donoghue Septs/Clans - that there may be four or more branches of genetically unrelated Dunaways in the Americas. A Dunaway study group would be a way to encourage those with the name to pursue genetic testing as an aid to helping them sort through the very many Dunaways descended from Colonial times.

As there are several known and potential spellings of the name - more than the permissible three - would there be a problem if those who subsequently joined the project were to informally include the variants while working among themselves?

Thank you,

David.
by David Dunaway G2G2 (2.0k points)
So, let me get this straight: you want a Dunaway Name Study, with tags Dunaway, Donnchadha, and O'Donoghue.  Is that right?  BTW, one of the main reasons for limiting them to three is that the form only gives me three spaces to use...but anybody who joins could use any name they wanted among themselves whilst working.

There is a Donoghue Name Study already set up but abandoned and ready to adopt.  Would you like to have that one as well? (That would give you two more tags to use.)
Donoghue is an evolution of the Irish, Donnchadha (the Irish alphabet having only 18 letters). Dunaway is a phonetic evolution which seems to have bypassed the Donohue phase - even as many Dunaways are connected to one of the several Donoghue septs; but, perhaps just as many or more Dunaways are not genetically connected to the O'Donoghues. So, neither O'Donoghue or Donnchadha were the variants I was thinking of, rather, the several variants of Dunaway: Dunniway, Donnaway, Dunway... But given that participants will be able to use any of the variants while working among themselves, Dunaway is the only name/tag that will be needed. Many of us already understand that the many variants to be one and the same name (perhaps the result of those who could not read or write adopting spellings that others had given to them).

I will decline the Donohue group offer. Sorting through the Dunaways is a quest to distinguish Dunaways from Dunaways and to see which of the O'Donoghues some of us might belong - but as genetic testing is pointing to a reality in which just as many (or more) Dunaways may not be connected to the Donoghues the Donoghue name/tag would be a complication which could well frustrate that latter group of Dunaways. I see Dunaway as an interim step in the quest to find where our Dunaway lines most likely connect to the Donoghues or Donnchadhas of Ireland circa the 17th century; not unlike how many Donoghues in America now seek out their lost connections to Ireland.

Again, thanks,

David.

OK, just thought I would ask.

I have created the Dunaway Name Study at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Dunaway_Name_Study

You can reach the companion category page by clicking on the phrase 'Dunaway Name Study' among the categories at the foot of the page. This is a list of all the profiles you include in your Study.

Whichever spelling you use, your category will always be [[Category:Dunaway Name Study]]

Hello Ros, Can you please set me up with the surname Galbraith. There are many variations, can I add them after creation? Otherwise I will get back to you with a list. regards Simon
by Simon Parker-Galbreath G2G2 (2.0k points)

I have created the Galbraith Name Study at:

As stated in the original question, I can only do the background redirects for Galbraith plus two others. Please let me know what they are as soon as possible.

Hello Ros,

I have two options, perhaps with your experience you can choose the best option for me please :-

1. either use two of the most common variations - Galbreath & Gilbreath or

2. Use two much different variations to show the diversity of the spelling - Culbreath & Kilbrath.

I

Thank you for your message.  I have now set you as manager.

As to the variants - I would go with the two most common.

Note to self: Nance needs the ONS badge plus redirect to Arries

Thank you, Ros, for setting up the ONS for both the Wittren and Arries surnames.  Do I need to let you know what the variants for these names are, or can I just add them to each page?
You can certainly add them, but if you don't tell me what they are, I cannot do the background technical stuff which forms part of the creation.
I apologize for not thinking of it when I made the initial request.  Here are the variants for each name:

Arries -> Arris -> Arres

Wittren -> Wittrein -> Wittrien -> Wittrin

Thanks again, Ros, for all that you do!
Done the Arries ones.

However, as it says in the question at the beginning of this thread, you can only have three *including* the name of the Study i.e. Wittren + 2 others.  Which ones did you want?
Ooops again!  Let's stay with the first three:

Wittren -> Wittrein -> Wittrien

Thanks!

OK, done.  All yours! smiley

Thank you for your message.  I have now set you as manager for both Name Studies.

G'day Ros,

I would like to be working on a one name study for the Joyner/Joiner surname.  Over the years I've been on wikitree I have put together some research aids for Joyner/Joiner families but I am a bit nervous about how to get them or myself part of an official wiki tree one-name-study.

It looks as though you had (incorrectly) set up a Joyner Name Study in 2017.  You last worked on it in July 2018.  You may wish to go through the category page - which has several subcategories - to reacquaint yourself with it. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Joyner_Name_Study

I have set up a freespace page (which was missing) and redirects; however, I need you to send me a private message so I can have your email address and set you up as manager.  Do not put your email address on this forum.

Thank you Ros, for such a speedy response.

Looking for study on the Surnames Ward, Wiecorek, Zeronda, McClure, and a few others but I’ll get those names out soon... sometimes there are so many... can’t remember them all...

When you read the question at the top of this thread, it seems as though you may have missed the links.

Check here: is there one for your name already?
There is already a Ward Name Study here:

If you have never run a Study before, we recommend that you start off with one or maybe two. If you have only been on WikiTree for the required 30 days, definitely only one!
