Help for folks researching Maryland ancestors

I have a copy of the book "Maryland Genealogies", Vol II. It is filled with articles from the Maryland Historical Magazine. It was copyrighted in 1980 and reprinted in 2008. It includes family bible records, genealogies and some miscellaneous data on different families. Some of the entries say they include people from Virginia and Florida as well. I am happy to do lookups for anyone who is having trouble finding information on their family, as my time allows. I will try to include the main families here: Caile, Carroll, Clements, Dorsey, Emory, Goldsborough, Gordon, Gough, Hall, Halley, Harrison, Haskins, Hausil, Hawley, Hesselius, Hollyday, Hungerford, Hyland, Hynson, Jones, Kemp, Key, Lambdin, Lane, Lea, LeCompte, Levis, Levy, Linthicum, Lloyd, Lockerman, Loockerman, Lowe, Lowndes, MacKeeles, Marsh, Merryman, Monroe, Morgan, Murdock, Neale, Owens, Owings, Pearce, Pennock, Plater, Poe, Price, Pritchett, Randall, Ridgely, Rigbie, Rockhold, Sewall, Skinner, Smallwood, Smith, Snead, Sparrow, Sprigg, Stansbury, Stevens, Stewart, Sweetser, Tasker, Taylor, Tilghman, Todd, Weems, West, Winchester, Wise, Wrightson, Webb, Woodward, Young.

Happy Sourcing

That's a great resource.  I've used that before as my family has the Carroll, Goldsborough, Gough, LeCompte, Ridgely and Skinner families.

Would there be anything about Matthew Howard (b. 1609)?

by James Stratman G2G6 Pilot (103k points)
Here is what it says on a Matthew Howard. I did a cross reference in Ancestry.com and I believe this to be the same person that you are looking for.

"Susannah Rockhould married first John Howard, son of Matthew and Sarah (Dorsey) Howard, second William Crouch."

You can see that he is mentioned in a secondary fashion, but maybe it is something that can help you. It is on page 317. It is part of "The Rockholds of Early Maryland" which was written by Nannie Ball Nimmo  which runs from pages 312-317. It is originally the from the Maryland Historical Magazine Vol XXXII (1937), 371-376.

Awesome offer!

Does the book have an author or editor?  The fact that the articles were published in the Maryland Historical Magazine speaks well of it.  When you give information to people, be sure to give them the complete citation from the specific edition of the Maryland Historical Magazine so that they will be able to source the information appropriately on WikiTree.

Thanks for the reminder Jack! I always try to source everything, but I would just have a jumble of information for something like this I am afraid. The book was indexed by Thomas L Hollowak. I also have the information for each article, who wrote it, and which volume of the magazine it comes from. Would you mind showing an example of how to cite it maybe from the information in the answer I gave to James above? I would really appreciate it. This is my weakest area.
Hi, Emily -- I'm glad this string is getting attention again!  Have you considered joining the Maryland Project (profiles since 1776) or the Province of Maryland team of the Southern Colonies Project (profiles before 1776?)

Here's how I would format a reference to an article in the anthology:  John Doe, "The Early Doe Family"  (March, 1985) pages 47-53 in Maryland Genealogies, Volume II, Samuel Smith, ed.  Baltimore:  Historical Publishing, 2008.

There are varying ways to present the material, but the key information is who wrote the article and when, who put the anthology together and when, where was it published and when, and what pages do you find the article on!

Hi Emily,

Would there be anything on Jedediah Gray, son of Thomas of Somerset/Worcester, Maryland born about 1746.  He married Eleanore unknown, children Littleton, Rouse, Thomas and Anna.  The Gray Family I am tracing came from St. Mary’s County, into Annamesex in Somerset, onto Snow Hill area. And Berlin, MD and left area 1830.

Hi Barbara,

Sorry to report that there isn't anything on any of the Gray's that you listed. I will try to keep my eyes open for you though. I have an extensive library

Barbara,

They didn't exactly leave the "area"--just moved across the state line into Delaware.wink

Child Caroline of Ebenezer, of Rouse, of Jedediah d.c. states born in Gumboro, Delaware (right at the MD/DE line) in 1833. Date is slightly off tho because in 1830 Ebenezer is in Broad Creek Hundred, Sussex Co., Delaware.

I too am interested in this family.

Note:  1830 Littleton Gray and brother Thomas Gray were on the move to Ohio: see US Census -  Not sure how many others went with the two brothers but there were a lot.
In 1830 Littleton was already in Franklin Co. OH per census.

Anything on Richard Perry (b. 1812 in Caroline County), his parents, Nathaniel Perry (b. about 1775 in Caroline County) and Sarah Harper (b. about 1780)? Or any earlier Perrys?

Or the Kennetts (William b. 1753 and any earlier Kennetts - eg the multiple Martin Kennetts)?
