What "privacy" setting is recommended to be used for profiles?

I am new to WikiTree and am having trouble understanding which privacy settings I should be using for the profiles I add? I have read the Help information but find it confusing as there are so many options and I would like to know which settings are the most beneficial for discovering family tree connections and helpful to WikiTree users?

It really depends on dates.

Profiles of people born over 150 years ago or who died over 100 years ago must be Open.

If you have someone such as your own mum or dad (if they have died), then you can choose a different level of privacy than open.  (I use green locks for mine, as that allows people to read the profiles and see the tree, but only the trusted list can edit.)

Wikitreers choose all different levels for their own profiles, because we are living and cannot have open profiles.

My own is set to "Private with Public Family Tree" .. mostly because I don't have a biography to read, just a listing of my ancestors.  Oh, and bling.  I have my bling (not as much as some folk do, though).

Thank you, good to know privacy recommendations
Melanie, I award you the Star!

You are a great WikiTreer!
Its still not clear to me. If in import a GEDCOM who can view the data of my family?

This is a sensitive question as living relatives didnt authorized the publication of the data....

What about the emails/ contacts?

David
Only profiles set to some version of open can be viewed.

Profiles for living people MUST be set to PRIVATE or UNLISTED (mostly the second), unless they are active members.
If a woman has living children, even if she's been dead for years, I set her privacy to private (red), because way too many banks still use your mother's maiden name as a security question, and I don't want the profiles I manage to be used for identity theft.

Living profiles that are not members are automatically unlisted for legal reasons.

It is suggested that members could set theirs at yellow.

Red is for those you want kept somewhat private.

White is fully open. Anyone can see what it contains and fellow members can edit (but not change LNAB).
