How to handle multiple matches?

On a relatively large tree, if I get a match from an ancestor, I often have tied into another tree, so all the preceding generations are naturally matches. Should I initiate a single match, or should I initiate all that I see? I hate to inundate someone with a rash of unecessary requests.

Advise please?

I was told to start with the oldest match and work forward in time.

Find the oldest profiel, (lowest surname-#) and the hightest, Combine, with the lowest as the target. keep doing this until its the only one. Compare before merging 100% though, different parents are conclusive of different people same name.
