Looking for any connection to Thomas Palmer Musket in the Revolutionary War

When my great-grandfather died young, his wife, Elizabeth (Gregory-4081) was left with nine young children.  Our family oral history is that she kept "body & soul together" by selling a valuable rifle that had been passed down in her family, named Palmer.  I am trying to find a connection to the Palmer musket in the Smithsonian that was ordered by George Washington in January 1775 for the Prince William County Independent Company in Virginia.  Any direction or help would be greatly appreciated!

I can think of two approaches off-hand.

1. You have the surname Palmer in your tree.  This line is not complete but the presumption is that one of your Palmer ancestors is related to the inventor or was the inventor of the Palmer Musket.  You need to build this line to find out.

2.  Perhaps you had a revolutionary War Ancestor who recieved a Palmer Musket and passed it down through the family.  You would need to demonstrate that they served in a unit that recieved the Palmer Musket.  Perhaps more research around the Musket and who actually used them?

Of course there are other various on these but right now both of them require that you to build out the rest of your tree from Molly.

Good luck!

Found this. https://savingplaces.org/stories/object-lesson-the-battle-tested-cliveden-musket#.XR_OvZNKgUs

Suggests there may be more "Palmer Muskets" than the 40 George ordered.

Thomas Palmer, North Ward, Philadelphia.
