There are two types of people:  those who are Italian and those who wish they were.

Ciao!

Would you like to join our Italy Project?

You don't have to have roots in a specific region or even have Italian roots to join the project. If you have a love for Italy and want to learn more while lending a helping hand, please join us.

The only requirements are that you:

  • Are a WikiTree member holding the WikiTree Genealogist badge;

  • Have signed the WikiTree Honor Code; and

  • Have the Pre-1700 Certification badge

All you have to do is click ANSWER and we will get your badge.

Check out the Italy Project page and our New Italian Roots Structure page.

Here are just a few topics in the project which may interest you:

  1. Regions of Italy (Sicily, Calabria, Campania, etc.)

  2. Notables (Nicola Machiavelli, Fiorella LaGuardia, etc.)

  3. Italian Diaspora (Italian migration around the world)

Many thanks for joining and let’s have some fun!

Bring it! Let's get this cannoli party started!
by Frank Santoro G2G6 Mach 5 (54.3k points)

surprise Hahah - you might want to reword that .blush

I do LOVE Cannoli but my diet does not. crying

So gelato, then? We have plenty of that, too.
I am pretty sure Cannoli is a health food.
HAHAHA! Definitely!
I opt for pizza!

And a vote from the North ... Milanesse Osso Buco wink

Well it is quite apparent that I am going to need to "fall off the wagon", that is my diet, and have an Italian Food binge fest.laugh

LOve Cannolis! I'll be right there!

Hi,  I'm Lauren-Kate.  I'm new to WikiTree so I don't have the Pre-1700 badge yet, but I have Italian ancestors and I'd love to join.  Last summer I started getting some of the Italian records from the Campania region.
by LK LaPlante G2G6 Mach 1 (19.4k points)
Someone will be around to issue you a badge. As for pre-1700, those badges are very easy to get. I look forward to seeing these records from Campania as I have family from there as well. Welcome!

I have ancestors from Calabria. I've been doing a lot of digging in the Italian records and would love to join the project.
by Bess Trenchard G2G Crew (810 points)
Hey, Bess. Saw you in the other thread. We're glad to have you aboard. A badge will be issued to you soon. Thanks for completing the pre-1700 quiz. I know you are going to be a big help. I have ancestors from Calabria as well!

Dear Chris,

By your definition, I guess I wish I were Italian!  Anyway, my research on Pezzutti family members and married-ins continues in Fontannafredda, Pordenone.  The new Italy project page looks great.  My badge from some time ago is still showing.  Thanks for keeping us focused. -NGP

I’m Italian by marriage. My wife’s grandparents were born in Italy in 1861. Can i get some help in finding out who their parents were?
by Bob Keniston G2G6 Pilot (260k points)
Of course. We welcome EVERYONE. Just need to give us the specifics. Like where they were born, names etc.
Both gp’s were born ca 1861, in Oliveto Citra, Campania, Italy. Gm LNAB is DeVito, FN Francesca. Gf first name Pasquale. Not sure of spelling of LNAB, but suspect it is Murini or Marini. Spelling in US after arrival is Marine.

So, good news and bad news here. Oliveto (and Oliveto Citra) records are online at the Antenati portal:

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Salerno/Stato+civile+della+restaurazione/Oliveto+Citra/

http://dl.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/v/Archivio+di+Stato+di+Salerno/Stato+civile+della+restaurazione/Olivetooggi+Oliveto+Citra/

The bad news is that 1861 births are not available. However, 1858 and 1863-1865 are available. So if the year wasn't exactly right (and often it's not), you might luck out.

Were they married in Italy before coming to the US? That might provide a backdoor to birth records (and at least names of their parents).

I've made feeble efforts to trace my stepdaughter's ancestry.  Her paternal side, believed to be from Calabria, all immigrated to Utica NY from 1898 (apparently widowed 2nd ggm with son and his spouse) to the 1920's (paternal gf and then the other ggps).  Surnames Scarpino, Mancusco, Lia, and unknown, plus a cousin line Brigano, many of the latter still in Calabria.  So I would make some effort to take it back further if the opportunity offers.

Funny the remarks about cannoli.  I'd assume that the variety made in North Boston is more authentic than the extremely different ones elsewhere in the USA.

I would love to join this project!  So much brick wall for me between here and Italy!  Hoping to find links, and help others if possible..Thankyou
by Christy Adams G2G1 (1.3k points)
Great!

What do you know about your Italian ancestors so far? It's probably best to try to trace them backwards starting from the most recent documents you have.
There are the documents I get from the Ellis Island passenger search that show when my grandparents arrived here early 20th century.  But beyond that I have found nothing.  Ancestry shows I have some 3-4th cousins here but haven't had much success there yet...
I hope we can help you out. There's bound to be information in places like Antenati and Familysearch. Checking out your profiles, I was wondering if you could share any info you might have. Census records and Naturalization papers would be a huge help and a step in the right direction. As would ship manifests.

But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Someone will get you into the project soon. I hope we can help you out!
Thankyou!  Both grandparents arrived here in 1923 and were born in Ferla Italy.  She was sixteen and he was about 34 when they arrived here in 1923.  She was separated from her entire family and somehow they all went to Argentina.  It was an arranged marriage.  On the manifest it gives the names of both mothers as closest relatives from whence they came but neither of those moms have surnames attached to them which seems odd to me.  She was Sebastiana LeMonaco which could also be spelled Lo Monaco.  He was Giovanni Fisicaro.  Her mom was "Grazia Gianfriddo" on the Manifest, and his mom was "Grazia Menta."   Thanks for your input, I'll see what I other papers I can find.
Good luck!
Thankyou!

I know they both came from Ferla, Italy and I have the passenger record as well as a lot of disconnected facts.  I was on Antenati this morning but wasn't quite sure what I was looking at there.

Antenati doesn't have Ferla yet, which is in Siracusa province. However, FamilySearch has Ferla records. 1900-1923 are freely available:
https://www.familysearch.org/frontier/search-bifrost/image/index?owc=MHDB-8Z3%3A361786101%3Fcc%3D2110810

Pre-1900 are available if you go to a Family History Center or a FamilySearch affiliate library:

Hi. I've been looking for family in Fara San Martino, San Severino, Palmiano, and Vaccarrecia/Concerviano. Have not found anything at this point from Italian records, though I have gotten the information listed above from U.S. immigration records. I am quite honestly confused by Italian municipalites, towns and provinces are organized!

I did sign up to be a genealogist and I did sign the Honor Code. No idea what the pre-1700 badge is.

I'm interested in joining. My ancestors are from the Campania region. I'm finding it hard to research beyond what I already know about them because there's no Elders alive to ask questions. For example, I learned from my grandparent's wedding certificate that my grandfather's parents are Domenico Tufo and Giuseppa Fucci, but I don't know anything else about my grandfather's past such as the names of his siblings etc.

Hey. I hope we can help you out. If you are able to find the naturalization papers, that might provide you with a clue. In the mean time, follow the "italy" tag and someone will be around to accept your request. I hope we can help!
Do you have any idea of the birth or death dates on your grandparents.  Did they emigrate?

Hello Everyone,

I am kinda new around here but I have traced the Italian side of my family to the Naples area of Italy through a 1940's us census and from my Grandmother. But since she is 95 yrs old now she can remember everything so I need help to find more info. Is anyone working on the Mele surname or the the Bazzano surname?
